I was watching one of the Harry Potter films over Christmas and went online to find out who had replaced Robert Hardy, and discovered he was still alive. I was sure he'd died a good few years ago.
are you thinking of the late great richard harris who passed away in 2002 ... he was the original potter chief wizard whatever
No, it was definitely Robert Hardy I thought had passed on; I knew Richard Harris was gone.

I thought he was already dead, until today... :(

Bob Holness, former host of daytime quiz show Blockbusters, has died at 83.

In a statement, his family said he had "died peacefully in his sleep" early on Friday morning.

Holness, who had suffered a series of strokes, had been in a nursing home. He is survived by his wife Mary, three children and seven grandchildren.

Holness "was also an accomplished theatre actor and his radio broadcasting career spanned over six decades," the family statement added.

South African-born Holness joined the BBC in the 1960s and hosted Late Night Extra on Radio 1 and Radio 2, alongside presenters including Terry Wogan.

The show continued to air on Radio 2's AM frequency only until 1975, before Holness moved to commercial station LBC, co-hosting the morning show with Douglas Cameron.

Early in his broadcasting career, he also became the second actor to portray James Bond, starring in a radio adaptation of Moonraker in 1956.

I'm sure I saw on the news a few years back that Paul Daniels had died. However, he was on a tv programme over the Christmas period, chatting away.
He's still going, despite this...

Magician Daniels saws off fingers

Magician Paul Daniels has told how he accidentally sliced off the top of his finger with a circular saw.
The television personality said he was making props in his garden shed on New Year's Day when the block of wood leapt up, exposing his left hand to the blade.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "The saw went right through my first finger, missed my middle one almost completely and took the top of my third one.
"How it missed the second finger is a trick in itself. The top of the third finger is all ground up and gone."

The entertainer, who lives in Berkshire, managed to stop the saw with his right hand and thrust his injured hand into his coat before running to his car and driving himself to hospital in Henley-on Thames.
He was later seen by plastic surgery specialists who saved his index finger, but were unable to save the top of his ring finger.

Although he initially feared for his career and is yet to regain full sensation in his digits, he is hopeful he will make a full recovery.
"I was very worried. They did a fantastic job. Everything's on the mend now," he told the newspaper.
The magician, who is due to go on tour next month, said he will have to "change my methods slightly" but his planned shows will still go ahead.

Pretty rough thing to happen to a top magician, but he is semi-retired now I guess.

Ouch! :(

Well, at least he didn't saw Debbie Magee in half!

"So what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?" Question to Debbie McGee from Mrs Merton. :D

Let's hope it wasn't his fingers.

Well, TBH, we've not seen much of him since the 90's so I figure it wouldn't have much impact!

Could've sworn Acker Bilk was long dead, but not so: he's 83 and still playing his greatest hit!

Acker Bilk 'fed up' of Stranger on the Shore

His record was the UK's biggest selling single of 1962 and it made him an international star.

He said: "I'm fed up with playing it. It's all right but you do get fed up with it after 50 years."

Good old Acker!

But a :nah: for the BBC headline:

Acker Bilk 'fed up' of Stranger on the Shore

Fed up OF?!

Has the beeb been taken over by mutant, tweeting, texting teenagers?

Acker Bilk - Respect due for one of the best names ever :)

According to Wiki
Max and his wife moved from Bournemouth to Queensland, Australia, in 2008.[2] She died there in 2011, aged 88.[2] Bygraves has Alzheimer's disease.[2] Bygraves' son Anthony now spends a great deal of time with, and cares for him.

Maybe you misheard a report of his wife's death.

I can remember seeing it on TV when I was a kid......must have got him confused with another games show host......Leslie Crowther?

Bit better than Bernard :). Don't hear it much at all these days, but Acker means "mate" or (loosely) "good bloke", and was still in use as an affectionate name when I was a kid.

Estuary creep has done local slang no favours :(.

My interpretation is:

Acker - money
Bilk - obtain or withhold money from someone by deceit, cheat or defraud

So a con merchant - a sort of variant on Sgt Bilko but funnier. :)

Jim Bown, The bloke off bullseye, could have sworn he died a few years back, but then there was a story last year about him recovering from multiple strokes

Yeah, that was my interpretation too.

I was surprised when I head that Ben Gazzarra had died recently as I was sure he'd died a few years ago.

Yeah, that was my interpretation too.

See where you're coming from, but no - acker is Somerset / South Bristol slang going back ages ("Reet me old acker?"). And Bilk is his actual surname!

OK, I shouldn't jump to conclusions! My version is funnier tho...
