Spills & Sundry Messes

I'm guessing that it's mostly rust. An old steel-hulled boat finally got its bilge pumped out before it was hauled away for scrap.

I wuz going to suggest the same but you beat me to it.
The perils of going off to do DIY work on the old place scuppers me yet again.

Lorry driver arrested after leaving bridge covered in thousands of potatoes

In Denmark on the 11 mile long Storebælt Bridge which connects the island of Zealand, where capital city Copenhagen is, with Funen Island.

Spuds were seen firstly on the westbound side then shortly after on the eastbound. A third batch was then found on a road near Kolding, a seaport on the Jutland peninsula about 40 miles west of the Funene city of Odense.

Looks like a protest over proposed increase in trucking charges.

Danish public broadcaster DR reported that the spilt potatoes happened on the same day Denmark’s parliament, the Folketing, passed new legislation taxing truck drivers transporting heavy loads.

Bill No. L 73 introduces a raft of green policies. Among them will be drivers of petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles over 3.15 tonnes being taxed 1.3 kroner (9p) per kilometre from 2025.

Tonnes of carpet glue spills over road in New Zealand after container crash

The incident happened in South Auckland, New Zealand at 11.20am local time when the truck crashed on the SH1 motorway on-ramp.

Traffic was halted as the truck also caught fire and was burning at the side of the road.

It’s believed the truck was carrying a huge 22 tonnes of carpet glue, and the clean-up effort will continue ‘for some time today’.

Brewery leak turns sea red in Japan

Visitors to a beach resort city in southwest Japan got a shock on Tuesday when they woke to discover the usually crystal-clear sea had turned an ominous shade of red – after a local brewery sprung a leak.

“We believe it was caused by the leakage of propylene glycol – a food additive listed in enforcement regulations of the Food Sanitation Act – contained in cooling water used to cool our factory facilities. We believe the leaked cooling water flowed into a river through a rain gutter, causing the sea to turn red,” Orion Breweries said.

It added that the leak had been “plugged” by 9:30 a.m. Tuesday – though a spokesperson for the Japanese Coast Guard told CNN the seawater near the brewery was still red as of Wednesday morning.

Propylene glycol is commonly used in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies it as “generally recognized as safe” for use in food.

M6 Milkshake.

The M6 has been closed after a large quantity of milk spilled onto the carriageway when a tanker crashed.

It hit the central reservation while travelling north between junctions 31 and 32 near Preston at about 07:00 BST and then crashed through into the southbound carriageway.

Lancashire Police said the motorway could be closed for "most of the day" after the milk and diesel spillage.

The male driver and woman passenger were injured and taken to hospital.

Ch Insp Patrick Worden said: "At this time we expect the motorway to be closed for some, if not most, of the day."

It appears that they still have the old style metal armco barriers there.
This is why they've been replacing them with concrete ones over the last few years, as they are less likely to allow crossover accidents like this.

Brewery leak turns famously crystal-clear sea water a 'gruesome' color

A brewery leak in the Japanese port city of Nago has led to a shocking sight as the nearby seawater turned red, reports said.

Residents woke up Tuesday morning to find the water had turned a "gruesome" shade of red. The brewery, owned by Orion Breweries, claimed that the color change was caused by a coolant used to regulate the temperature of the equipment that had flowed into a nearby river.

There's a bit of money involved there I should reckon.

The distillery said: ‘We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams available to do so immediately.

What's the deal with the green sludge spilling onto the streets of Manhattan?

On Wednesday, footage of what appeared to be a thick, bright-green sludge oozing around a drain a block away from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum began circulating on social media.

"Looks radioactive," one user commented as others joked that it was time to "call Ghostbusters" or that the sludge looked similar to the substance that turned the main characters of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" into mutants.

A day later, the green substance is still present, though it has melted down into large puddles of equally green liquid. In any case, three questions remain: What is it? Where did it come from? And is it dangerous?

A representative for Con Ed told Insider crew members were sent to the site and confirmed that the company's equipment was not the source of the liquid. A rep for the Port Authority did not respond to a request for comment.

Maggots from rotten fish in overhead bin fall on passenger aboard international Delta flight

Passengers aboard a Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit got a surprising, and disgusting, announcement from the pilot an hour into their flight — they’d be turning around due to maggots falling from a bag in an overhead bin, showering a passenger in the process.

Maggots — the larvae of flies — were found falling from a bag carrying an apparently rotten fish on Delta Flight 133 on Tuesday.

Passenger Philip Schotte, who is Dutch and lives in Iowa, said he saw a maggot fall on a woman at the end of his row, and saw several more fall around her seat. "I could see she was freaked out. She was also composed, like she wasn’t like screaming or yelling or anything, but I could tell she was freaking out internally. Especially when I could see one actually fall on her. She immediately flinched and made sure that this maggot was off of her clothes,” he recalled.

He and the woman called for a flight attendant, but had to wait for the takeoff process to finish. Once they did, the flight attendants opened the storage and several more maggots fell out.

Delta apologized to customers in a statement saying, “their trip was interrupted due to an improperly packed carry-on bag.”

“The aircraft returned to the gate and customers were placed on the next available flight. The aircraft was removed from service for cleaning,” Delta said.

Ryanair would classify the maggots as an inflight meal and charge extra,

"Will that be maggots or non-maggots, sir?"
"Are they more expensive than a seat?"
"Yes, sir. An actual seat will cost you twice as much as maggot-provided."

River in Cornwall turns fluorescent green due to ”harmless dye”

Part of a river turned "fluorescent green" after a "harmless dye" was used nearby, the Environment Agency has said.

_132956467_mediaitem132956466.jpg.webp

It said it received a "number of calls from members of the public" on Saturday about the river in the Danescombe Valley, near Calstock, Cornwall.

It said the cause was a "fluorescent dye" which had been used to trace the pathway of drains.

The agency said it was "completely harmless".

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-68601273

I presume that the Environment Agency has reported itself to itself, fined itself £100K of taxpayers’ money and paid the cash into its own funds…
