Strange Dogs: Canine Forteana

Saw this on Facebook. It reminds me of Nip, the His Master's Voice dog!

Mosaic floor depicting a dog and a knocked-over gold vessel. Discovered in 1993 during construction of the new Alexandria Library, Egypt. Now currently in the Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria. Width: approx. 70 cm. Date: approx. 200-100 BC.

Good Dog!

Dog leads owner to cat stuck 100ft down Cornish mine shaft

Daisy and Mowgli

,
Daisy alerted her owner to Mowgli's predicament

A lucky cat was rescued by firefighters after falling 100ft (30m) down a mineshaft in Cornwall - and it was all thanks to a quick-thinking dog.

After six days of searching, Mowgli's owner Michele Rose said she had "almost given up hope" of finding her missing pet. But she said she saw her dog Daisy "going berserk", running in and out of woods near their home in Harrowbarrow. Daisy's intervention led to the rescue of her feline friend, Ms Rose said.

Daisy guided her along a footpath toward the Prince of Wales old mine workings, she said, before "stopping dead in her tracks" next to the mineshaft.

"Daisy is a superstar, she's an amazing dog. Without Daisy doing that Mowgli could still be down there, that's for sure," Ms Rose said. "She was persistent in making me follow her, it was amazing."

The RSPCA and Cornwall Fire and Rescue were called but it was "too dark" on the first night to access the mineshaft, the RSPA said.

That's our @Tempest63's Dusty!

That is a very nice moggie. According to the knowledgeable "Girl with the Dogs" on Youtube, black and white cats are little angels.

The one in her video is remarkably similar to the one above!

Any dissenters from this, before I rush out and get one? Perhaps best posted on the cats thread to avoid further cat derailment of this one! :)

PS: I want the doggie as well! And the next doggie to be posted on this thread!

That 'gold vessel" might be the earliest gramophone ever known!* The doggie looks excited to be there!

The HMV terrier was Nipper. Yes, I'm afraid he did - often!

*If we discount those accounts of Chinese boxes, which conveyed the Emperor's voice to the furthest reaches of his domain, simply by shouting into them. When you opened the lid . . . bingo! :nods:

I'm sure you've seen the brilliant video of the photographers trying to get Nipper to sit still for the picture.
They are obviously highly amused. :chuckle:

There's a longer version somewhere but you get the drift.
Lovely little film and I had never seen it.

Nipper is looking well in 1900, despite having died five years earlier!

His reincarnation has a piratical eye-patch and temperament to match! They must have rubbed that horn with badger-grease. I know I do.

Nerd note: The dog-and-trumpet image was used in brochures and publicity but it was not until 1910 that Nipper got onto the label, with the name "His Master's Voice". :)

Yup, there was a line of succession after the original Nipper. Crucially though, they were all Jack Russells. :nods:
The one in the video sums up all the JRT characteristics that we know and love. :chuckle:

I like how hard the men are laughing. They love that dog. :)

Storm Debi has hit here now, with rain squalls and very heavy winds.
Two my dogs (the pug and the Jack Russel cross) are behaving normally. My lurcher Jago is behaving like an idiot!
He's running around inside and acting incredibly overexcited. When we let him out - as he's often demanding at the moment - he's acting like he wants me to go with him. When I do, he stands there, expecting me to do something. At one point he was whining outside the door and refused to come in, even behaving scared to enter.
I wonder if he's responding to some harmonics caused by the exceptional winds?

Our was akin to Toto in the wind today.
The best remedy for this, apparently, is to lie down in a dirty puddle.

Luckily (in our situation) we didn't have a puddle. If we had a puddle, we'd be worrying about our increased damp.
It reached a point when we let them out - joyfully - and they just stood there.
I know there is a risk of any owner experiencing anthropomorphism ... but the three little bad boys suddenly showed more damn human expression than I've experienced from humans. I could've taken the part of 'dog whisperers' and so on.
The three of them said "WTF? Let us in! It's shitty!"
All joking aside, I was more concerned about Jago's reaction.
He went out, along with the others ... but he whined at the door and when I let him in, he stood there (like an idiot) and at one point had to physically pull him inside.
It must be said, once inside and calm, he trotted around with no problem.

Missing dog found alive after spending six years in the woods

Rose, a black Patterdale terrier, was discovered by a rescue team nearly seven years after running away from her family.

The 12-year-old dog survived just six miles away from her home, where she ate food left out for badgers and was known as the local stray.

‘It came to light that someone had been feeding her for what they said was ten years and turned out to be six-and-a-half.
After luring Rose into a metal cage with chicken, the team managed to rescue her and get her medical treatment – where they discovered a microchip.

After a thorough search they found Rose’s owners on Facebook and got to tell them the glorious news that she was still alive and well.

Sadly, due to a change in circumstance, Rose’s family won’t be able to take her back, so she will be going into rescue again.
‘It is sad that she hasn’t got owners to go to but she is still going to be okay

Drone finds dog, they don't just rain destruction down from the skies.

A thermal drone has been used to find a dog that was missing for 12 days.

Ulysse went missing on 20 December during a walk in Houghton Conquest in Bedfordshire.

A team from Nottinghamshire-based charity Drone to Home spent fewer than two hours searching for the missing Hungarian wire haired vizsla when they spotted him in nearby Haynes on Sunday.

The dog's owner Sam Boyle is fundraising to buy the charity another drone.

Puts paid to all the old gits in my town that always say "All these treats and toys for dogs - madness! Dogs should have 'em - it's not normal! It's all a modern trendy idea!" etc.

Well, a rope and a ball is certainly de rigueur.

Nothing squeaky though please.

My old wolfhound tried playing with tennis balls as a puppy. Got bored after accidentally biting them in half. The basketball we have him lasted a little while longer, and the hockey pucks took a while but made a mess.

We found a ball last week that we lost on a walk a year ago!
One of those quite hard rubber ones that go for miles if the ground is firm.

Luckily Ariel has four legs to stand on. Vid at link.

Ariel, the six-legged dog found dumped in a supermarket car park, has had surgery to remove her extra limbs.

The 11-week-old spaniel hit the headlines after being abandoned outside a Pembrokeshire branch of B&M in September.

About £15,000 was raised by well-wishers all over the world, enabling her to have a life-changing operation.

Surgeons also managed to save all four of her "normal" limbs after fears one might have to be amputated as well.

Looking at weather reports of high winds and rain from the next 'named' storms.
If I'm late tomorrow to the party, it's because my idiot lurcher wanted to stand in the garden at 3 AM and refused to come in.
