Like the electrocutions and other electromagnetic effects, these phenomena may seem baffling and difficult ot believe. But they were sighted by numerous and independant witnesses. No reductionnist explanation exists. They had nothing to do with the flash of an explosion or a reflection on smokes (and certainly not with a "photo-flash" caused by the "vaporisation" - wow ! - of the aluminium roof, like official experts tried to support ; this inquiry looks more and more like a pseudo-science contest to them). Many statements included such depictions, notably from SNPE workers. But were not properly studied. The police and official experts often tried to dissuade witnesses to report their sightings. But a significant number of them were investigated precisely on many occasions. Some testified to the court ; far from deluded, their statements remained consistent and convincing. Despite the hostility from the judge, who had in advance stated that testimonies were worthless ! It should be teached in all law and police schools... The court thought appropriate to question them on 1 April...
Some saw only a flash, or flashes in succession. But others saw distinct lightnings or rays (sometimes alongside a flash, separated by a few seconds), at least hundreds of meters longs. Strikings from the transformers couldn't explain them (although they could relate to some other light manifestations). There seem to have been a number of them, in different shapes and directions. Alain Hodin, who studied 35 precise testimonies, classified these sightings into 3 categories : similar to a usual thunderstorm lighthning, like a huge electric arc, blinding ; very fast, but they can be seen moving ;
straight, like a laser ; sometimes instantaneous, no direction visible ; but sometimes movement can be seen ; bright or blinding ;
curved, diaphaneous, and slow, more like a moving light.
Examples :
*
Patrick D. (already mentioned) was driving to the west along the Route d'Empalot (north of the Pole) in a Ford Mondeo with his father. He heard and felt a very strong explosion, saw a very violent lightning, like from a thunderstorm but maybe larger, at least hundred of meters long, white/blue, moderately oblique, with a south-east/north-west direction ; he thought it erupted from the prilling tower. It was so bright that it lit up AZF, despite that the weather was sunny ; he could see the whole scene through trees, like a chinese theater ! He heard a hissing, like a piece of red heated metal plunging into water This first group of events led him to park his car (which took, at 75 km/h -47 mph - , appr. 8-9 seconds). Then, he and his father saw the upper part of the green tower lifting up, and explode. 1 second later, they felt the tremendous blast from B221.
The police chose at first to ignore him. Later, after a private investigator who had been heard by the PJ mentioned his statement to them, Pr Arnaudiès, they were forced to hear him, but tried to convince him that he had witnessed nothing unusual (they even dared to dish out the silly seismic explanation, it was not difficult for him, a highly qualified physicist, to put them in their place). A mysterious caller, claiming he was the "director of the SNPE", phoned him later to try to convince him there had been no lightning, to no avail. He stood to his testimony before the court, despite being interrogated quite harshly. D2043

Similar sightings : Nelly C. (already mentioned), saw a blinding lightning erupting from the green tower, at least tens of meters long, after hearing an explosion and feeling a violent tremor (D2804, D2930). Patrick D., a SNPE worker, heard two explosions, the first seemingly from inside the SNPE, the second maybe from the Lilas transfo. ; at the same than the second sound, he saw a huge lightning ascending from the prilling tower, a few seconds before the B221 shockwave ( http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_SNPE-IX.html (go to #3) ) (D2089 : http://www.azf-10h18.com/SNPE/Temoin%20 ... seille.gif ).

*
J.-P. B. was in his office, 1500 m (4930 ft) south of the crater, when he saw a lightning, like a gigantic electrical arc, slighly oblique, at least 300 m long, white-fire and blinding. Its base was hidden by a building, but the azimuth pointed towards the north of the SNPE. Its height, at its proximal end, was estimated at 140 m (460 ft). He saw a few seconds later, a black column, from the azimuth of the crater. Followed immediately by a powerful blast.
The policeman who took his deposition refused to write that the lightning took place before the B221 detonation. He kept repeating to J.-M. B. that he had been shocked, and couldn't remember what happened. Mr B. had to issue a second statement.
http://toulouse.azf4.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88 11.5.2006 11:58 p.m. (D0427)
Laurent S., a driver, may have seen the same phenomenon : he witnessed a lightning, seemingly falling on the plant (statement issued on 1 october ; PV 2001/539/D42).

*
Mr A. was at a market, at La Faourette, 3 km to the north-west of the crater. At 9.30 am, despite that the weather was sunny, he was surprised to see brown mists in the direction of the Chemical Pole. Around 10:15, he felt suddenly the ground shaking. 3 to 4 seconds later, he saw a lightning, descending from the sky, in the direction of the Toulouse Stadium, (north of the Pole), where stands an old hydraulic plant. Then, a few seconds later, he heard a moderately strong explosion. 6 to 7 seconds later, a much stronger explosion.

*
Gabrielle F. was driving to the north on the Route d'Espagne (opposite to Patrick L., already cited). She had bypassed Door B, and stopped at a traffick lights, in front of the north-west angle of the plant. When she sighted a blinding yellow-red lightning/beam in front of her car, very low and perfectly straight, coming from the SEMVAT (public transport company) (she thought she saw it moving, it was not instantaneous) and directed towards the AZF guardroom at Door A. She then heard an explosion from her right, like a plane hitting the sound barrier, she thought it was a consequence of the beam. The lights turning green, she drove fifty meters before she was hurt by the B221 shockwave, and, badly hurt, she had to park her car. An unknown man then drove her to the Purpan Hospital, where she stayed for 4 days.
During her stay at the hospital, she was visited by four different psychologists, who had a very strange behaviour. They kept telling her "kindly" that no, she had not seen the lightning, no, she hadn't heard the first explosion. The director of the hospital later denied that he had ordered any psychologist to take care of her. But on 30 November 2001, German journalist Rosemarie Gratz confirmed in an article published by Freitag that victims of the disaster who had been witnesses to unusual events, were quasi-brainwashed by psychiatrists or psychologists employed by the City of Toulouse, who tried to convince them that they were victims of autosuggestion. Tirat and Hériot confirm that Toulouse mayor, Philippe DOUSTE-BLAZY, had asked all psychologists and psychiatrists of Toulouse to come to a meeting in the city hall, in the hours following the disaster. As a whole, Douste-Blazy's behaviour was very ambiguous (and opportunist) in the following years. Angering the government by sometimes recalling he had heard two explosions. Stopping only when he was promoted Foreign Minister (a very bad one indeed).
Her troubles did not end there. She was shocked the police did not contact her. Especially as they had retrieved her car, and still had it in their custody. A few days later, she went to recover her car, but they heard her only distantely, and did not call her again, despite her insistence. She had later a bad surprise : she found that in their 2002 preliminary report, the SRPJ had written she had driven only fifteen meters. With the obvious intent to claim that the first explosion and the lightning all came from the 221 explosion. Despite that their in situ report specified her car was indeed where she remembered. She had to ask Judge Perriquet to rectify.
She reiterated her statement to the court, despite that the judge tried to destabilize her.
Note : like in Patrick D.'s sighting, the lightning/beam was in a line with the unexplained dark scrach.

more to come...

Patrick L. was driving his van to the South on the Route d'Espagne. Having bypassed the entrance A, he suddenly spotted a thin (like a pencil), bright, white-blue ray of light crossing the road, at 1.8 - 2 m above the ground. He could see no direction, it was instantaneous. He was blinded when his van crossed it. He felt the B221 shockwave about 10 seconds later. This was not the same phenomenon than Gabrielle F., they were facing opposite directions. Patrick L.'s beam came from the south-west, and was not blinding when seen sideways (D1273).

AZFES p.18, AZFSE p. 234, AZFEA p.196.

*
Michel V. testified on 5 October 2001. He was driving on the Avenue des Corps Francs-Pommier, turning into the highway A64, so that the AZF plant was in front of him. Suddenly he sighted a very long, very bright and powerful ray of light/fire, very oblique (20° from the vertical) upon the factory, just behind the red tower. It seemed to come from very high the sky, and tried to spot the source, towards the East-Nrth-East, but could see nothing. He heard like a very strident whistling, similar to a jet fighter. He spotted a plume of white smoke at the base. He then felt the schockwave from B221.
He issued a statement to the Gendarmerie of Cugnaux. It was not transmitted to the instructor judge. Michel V. had to contact Grande Paroisse's lawyer Daniel SOULEZ-LARRIVIÈRE for his testominy to be taken into consideration.

Stéphanie M. came to testify to the court, but the police had never deigned to hear her. She was delivering a packet at the entrance of the factory. When she spotted a ray of light, 1.5 m above her van, white, bright but not blinding, directed north-west/south-east, 3 to 5 cm wide, impacting a nearing buiding (probably I0). She thought the impact was followed by an "inverted mushroom". She felt the shockwave immediately after (and was left with an impaired arm).

*
Albert R. was speaking with two colleagues in his office of the SEMVAT, 587 m west/south-west to B221. When he spotted a ray of soft light, blue, like the flame of a blowlamp, not blinding, vertical, perfectly straight. Its base was near the ammonia workshops, it ascended at least at 350-400 m. It was immediately followed by a power cut, then, 1 second later, the sound of a first explosion, 3 or 4 seconds later, the B221 explosion.

Similar sighting, with same location : Mrs B. 275, rue de Seysses, 1000 m north-west of the crater.

Michel C. (already cited) was in the courtyard of the firm Technal, 1700 m (5590 ft) to the south-west of B221. When he saw a straight lightning, white boarded with blue, 5 seconds before he heard a first explosion and saw a ochre and black pillar of smoke ascend from the azimuth of the SNPE phosgen area. One of his colleague depicted a horizontal light, very bright and low. It looked "vibratory", like high voltage electricity. There was a power cut at the same time. He thought the two were linked. He then saw a sudden yellow-purple glow. At least six seconds later, he saw the 221 detonation. These phenomena were well distinct (D2803, D4128, D5451, D5466).

Thanks, Analis, for these detailed reports. Certainly a very strange case, but not much discussed outside France, it seems.

(Your English translations are on the whole very good, but I hope you won't mind me pointing out one particular error: you wrote: "It should be teached in all law and police schools...". However, to teach is an irregular verb in English, so you should have said: "It should be taught in.."
- and taught rhymes (appropriately enough) with Fort! :D )

So, what was it? Terrorist attack? Industrial accident? Natural disaster? UFO attack (or malfunction)? Definitely a conspiracy, anyway, if it's only TPTB trying to cover up that they haven't got a f*cking clue what's going on! Keep up the good work.

Well, it's not discussed in France too ! The beginning of the trial changed nothing to this state of things : there is a complete mediatic blackout. I. e., the trial is almost unmentioned in the written press or on TV (a small exception : Le Figaro published an article from Marc Mennessier, based on an academic publication, dismissing the seismo-acoustic explanation). On their internet sites, the "great" media are discrete, they only give sporadic accounts - and usually omit to mention any inconvenient fact. So, a trial relating to a major disaster, with many lessons to be learned, simply vanished from the mediatic scope. This alone points that something is definitely not right. The reason to their silence is simple : it is so obvious that this trial is a farce, that they know they couldn't hide it.

A grammatical point I had forgotten...

Yes, it looks like a carnival of fantasy. There are a multitude of facets. The most baffling is that each looks genuine when investigated. For example, despite obstruction from the court, new evidence has emerged pointing towards a "regular" terrorist attack. But it suggests too a set-up. Other sides point towards new technologies. My opinion is that it was a complex manipulation. The truth is probably convoluted.
Just a thought. When Nick Redfern wrote his article in Fortean Times 242 on Project Kugelblitz, he could barely come with an example. Maybe this would interest him. Or David Hambling ?
The UFO attack ? Many spontaneously thought of it, when they read the testimonies. I think this had a human origin (but it asks many questions). Now... would it happen, certainly, they would cover it up !

More sightings :
Anne G. was working inside the buildings of the firm Europe Sols, at exactly 547 m (1800 ft) from the crater. Suddenly she heard a deflagration, like a plane crossing the sound barrier, but stronger. The ground shook immediately after, so strongly that she was thrown to a wall and two of her colleagues fell. As she fled, she spotted through a window a thick horizontal luminous bar, yellow-white, perfectly straight and so blinding she was left with a "snow blindness" for four days. She couldn't discern where it ended or began, but noted a perfectly spherical bulge on its right side, like a ball of light. The whole was uniform in color and light. For a few seconds, she could see nothing ; when she recovered her sight, she saw the shockwave coming towards her, "like a tornado". Like others, she was visited by psychologists who tried to convince her that was she had seen was only in her head... One of her colleagues saw a ball of fire coming through a window.

Jacqueline D. lived in a flat 9 km (5.6 miles) to the north-west of AZF She was surprised to see grey clouds above the Chemical Pole, soon mixed with a yellow cloud, as the weather was sunny. She thought maybe a thunderstorm was coming. Then, she saw two oblique lighthning/beams, very shining, divergent like a V. She couldn't be sure they came from the ground, as they were instantaneous. They didn't come from a single point. She lost sight of them in the clouds. She sighted them appro. 6 seconds before she heard the 221 explosion. This means they took place 20 seconds after the blast. They were similar to an usual lightning from a thunderstorm ; except that they were perfectly straight. Their source, on the right of the red tower, may be a wooded area south-east of AZF, belonging at the time to Grande Paroisse. Curiously, this area belongs now to the Army (as it had been until 1987), and is a forbidden ground ( http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_BALLASTIERES-I.html (go to#6) ).
She issued a statement to the police on 24 september 2001. Later, she was to be reinterrogated at her home. Curiously, the investigator cancelled her summoning (D0589, D0591, D5452).

Yvonne Maneaud, a few minutes after she had spotted a flying object, saw a vertical lightning in the same direction. A few seconds later she felt the shockwave.

Christian F. was located at the south of AZF, when he spotted the dark pillar of smoke in the direction of B221 sighted by a number of witnesses. A fraction of a second later, he saw a ray or lightning, a second before the pillar turned into a massive cloud and devastating shockwave (D0243, D4422, D4423).

Reconstruction : http://www.azf-10h18.com/CRATERE/Temoig ... 0Photo.jpg

Others described lightnings or light trails shaped like arches.
Like Lucien T., who was working at Tolochimie (2 km south of the crater), heard a first explosion, and saw an arc, looking like a curved strip of different colors, similar to a rainbow (reconstitution on 15 May 2003), before he felt the second davastating explosion. AZFEA p. 184.

Didier C. (already mentionned) was standing 3 km to the north of the crater, when, in succession, he saw a very bright flash, coming from the left of the great SNPE tower (i.e. at the core of the plant) ; heard a deflagration and felt his building shaking ; saw a white smoke ascending and broadening, taking on a mushroom shape (was located above the north of the SNPE) ; sighted a luminous arch from the SNPE to AZF ; saw then heard a second explosion (D1266).
http://azf-enqueteassassinee.typepad.co ... .html#more

One of the most important testimonies comes from Frédérique G. (already cited), secretary of high school Gallieni (less than 700 m north of the crater) (D5313, D6138, D6139). While sometimes considered as a possible hint of a projectile, she seems to depict the same phenomenon than Didier C. (a kind of plasma ?). She was at her office, when she heard a deflagration. Looking towards the source of the sound, she noticed a blinding lightning above the SNPE ; not like a thunderstorm lightning, but like a blurry luminous shape, moving from the left to the right, white-blue and curved like an arch. It was moving at a speed estimated at 80 m/s. It was coming from the SNPE, but she could not say if it originated there. Had she not heard the first explosion, she wouldn't have seen it. She reiterated her deposition on the 1 April hearing, including how police officer Jean-Pierre Bellaval tried to intimidate her ; not that the court or the prosecution seemed to find that reprehensible at all.

Equally important are Simone G. and Françoise B.'s depositions. They were walking on a path along the Garonne, to the north of the Route d'Empalot, at only 300 m of the Chemical Pole. Simone G.'s depiction was very similar to Frédérique G.'s : she heard a short deflagration, looked towards the plants and saw an arc of a circle of violent yellow light, illuminating the surroundings. It was so luminous that when she issued her statement on 5 October, her eyes were still under treatment. A few seconds later, she felt a second, very powerful explosion, followed by a grey and orange cloud. She was of the opinion that the first detonation was the cause of the second. She testified on the 1 April hearing (D0890).
Françoise B. saw something else before the first explosion. Her attention was caught by a "fireworks" rocket. "Like a mostly pink ball, ascending vertically at more than 100 m", leaving a kind pink trail ("surrounding") behind it. When it reached the apex of its trajectory, it exploded in a mushroom of pink gas (it didn't shatter into pieces), resulting in her opinion as a moderately strong detonation. It was followed by a second "rocket", roughly parrallel to the first one, but to its right. This one was orange and two times bigger, and was followed too by a mushroom, and another, more powerful detonation. Reconstitutions showed that the origin of the phenomenon was located at the SNPE (D3238, D3243). AZFEA p.189.

Intriguingly, the day before, around 18.30 pm, Brigitte C. was driving on the pOnt d'Empalot with her daughter Marie. The SNPE was 500 m in front of them. When they noticed a dark blue, luminous curved band, from the left side of the bridge towards the city. Was it a "rehearsal" ?
Their deposition was sent directly to instructor judge Perriquet by the association Mémoire et Solidarité. Curiously, police claimed the witnesses never came to testify to them. While Brigitte and Marie C. maintain that thay had issued a statement in central precinct.

Now, the enigma of the quake felt and registered before the explosion of the shed, often appr. simultaneously with the first explosions. It was registered at a distance of almost 1000 km by seismometers, until Germany and Spain. There is no lack of them in the region of Toulouse, the close Pyrenees being a highly seismic area. The OMP (Obesrvatoire Midi Pyrenées) seismograph being completed by numerous stations from the RéNaSS and the CEA-DAM (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique - Direction des Apllications Militaires).
Curiously, the investigation (or rather the lack of it) focused on the OMP seismograph, appr. 4,2 km of the crater ( http://lesnews.org/documentation/SISMOLOGIE.html ). It was quickly described as an out of order seismometer, whose transversal component had been disabled or unplugged, God knows why (seismographs register three components : longitudinal, vertical and transversal). It was not even properly buried. An other version said that it was tested. Nonetheless, and quite intriguingly, coming from a machine ready for the scrapheap or not, the experts from the OMP will try to prove at any cost that it is consistent with the official version. Strange determination. OMP chairwoman of the Scientific Council Annie SOURIAU released a report to the Academy of Sciences as soon as 3 december 2001, quite fast in fact. Despite that the Academy validated it quickly, on 11 february 2002, it was so full of errors that she had to issue two corrective statements. But the final result is not better. This report didn't contain any study of the location of the epicenter. She simply stated that it had to be centered on the crater. The study is studded with similar faults of reasoning, inconsistencies, and factual errors. Apart from the incredible magnitude (she admitted that she couldn't link it to the energy released), she states that S waves are not present at the source of the quake, not from the readings, but because "it is an explosion". What certainly looks like a pike of S waves on the vertical component is reduced to a bounce of P waves and called P2 (sic), despite that it is stronger than the true P pike ! Similarly, two shifted pikes on the horizontal graph, where the P wave should be plainly visible, are called P3 and P4. And how convenient that the transverse component, where the S waves are the most visible, is not present. As to the assertion that the seismometer was not buried, this seems ruled out by the presence of a background noise of 400 µm/s, consistent with a buried position.
Souriau's interpretation of RéNaSS recordings is not better ; S waves are clearly visible on their Pyrenean stations, and are identified as such by them. But she invents Lg waves (no relation with the Love waves, it seems), supposedly a guided wave resulting from multiple subcritical reflexions of S waves sur des interfaces crustales, themselves "not present at the source since it is an explosion, [resulting] from conversions of P waves on crustal interfaces (sic)". The report makes up similarly the existence of different "plastic" layers on the surface (re-sic), but admits that it doesn't account satisfactorily for the readings...

A more serious examination leads to a very different conclusion : far from being the product of a disabled seismometer, the readings are clear and consistent with the basic components of a classic earthquake : the two pikes of body waves, well distinctive on the vertical component, the first P (longitudinal) followed by the second and bigger S (transverse), then the surface waves (Love and Rayleigh). Not the features of a surface explosion, where the body waves are less important (notably the S), and often quite indistinguishable. The redudancy of small pikes shows that the seism is not exactely punctual. That the waves are shifted on the horizontal and vertical graphics is evidence that the waves were oblique, and came from a subterranean source (explosive or natural). As to the lapse of 0.5 s separating the two pikes, if we suppose a surface speed of spreading of 2800 to 3500 m/s for the P waves (inferred from the tests of 2004), the speed of the S wave being 1.7 times inferior ; the epicenter was located at a range of 1.7 to 2.5 km of the OMP ; so at least at 1.8 km from AZF.
A supposition is that a microseism was waited by the OMP, linked to a close subterranean origin (experiment ?). Too small, it wouldn't have been detected by seismographs located at a greater distance. Hence the tranverse component had been disabled, so that it wouldn't be possible to identify clearly the S waves, and its underground origin couldn't be established with certainty. But it is only speculation. We don't even know if this component was truly out of order. Expert Michel Stasi claimed in February 2003 that he could extract the three components. And A. Souriau didn't know at first which one had been unplugged ! In any case, the truth can't be determined anymore. The seismometer has been destroyed, like many other potential exhibits.
That doest not mean that the seism related to the crater was not detected. It was, as a small pike, registered appr. 9 seconds after the first signal. It was interpreted as an acoustic signal. If seismometers can register acoustic waves, this signature is much too strong for being interpreted this way. It comes at a magnitude of slightly less than 1.5 ; exactely as should be expected from the size of the crater. The time interval is consistent too with the other data, pointing that the quake was contemporaneous with the first explosions, and dating the main explosion 8 to 10 seconds after these. It is possible too that other sources were involved, given the mutilicity of explosions - although most of them probably didn't have much seismic impact ; but they may complicate the matter.

As an aside, a series of tests were conducted from July to September 2004, at the request of the instructor judge. While the experts claimed that they confirmed their interpretation, in fact nothing adds up. Once more, the study included gross errors and inconsistencies. Unsurprisingly, only one explosion was heard. The tests used buried explosive charges of 20, 25 and 35 kg of TNT equivalent. Why not use 110 to 150 kg ? Because it would reveal too obviously how much the official version is bogus ? Nor the amplitudes, nor the location and duration (52 or 53 s in 2001, 29 s in 2004) are similar. Pn (primary waves) and Pg ( result of a reflection) are confused...

Coming to the precise location of the epicenter. Pierre Grésillaud got down to that task, with the help of Romanian seismologists ( http://lesnews.org/documentation/EPICENTRE.html ) . They found that the most consistent origin, deduced from the multiple recordings, was located near the Laffrey Military Hospital, and the Rangueil academic hospital, slightly to the east of the Pech David Hill. Certainly, this would require a review from a qualified team ; and overall, they would need the data from the CEA-DAM, precise to 1/1000 s ; but the only released until then are downgraded to 1/100 s (when it didn't not simply refuse to give them). The reason the authorities retain them, is that they know the quake was not located at AZF. EDF refused too to release the records from its nuclear plants. As to the RéNaSS, it destroyed the files from 9 of its stations ! But testimonies and material evidence "from the field" confirm a location near Rangueil.

Seismic effects were diversely felt, as it is always the case. Certainly, some were affected by the surface waves from the crater. But a large number of depictions clearly can't be linked to the explosion of the shed. They may have various causes. Overpressures in underground water conducts, caused by boiling water heated by convection currents, an hypothesis studied by Daniel Dissy - it is established that an old conduct was present under the shed and its surroundings, and a pumping plant is located just near to the Lilas transfo. The proximity to surface explosions. But all incompatible with the official theory.
Already mentionned, the witnesses 2 and 3 from http://lesnews.org/documentation/FUMEE/FUMEE.html ; M. D., whose buiding shook a few seconds the initiation of the explosion of the shed ; Nelly C., at 870 m from the crater, who felt her buiding vibrating violently, had time to see smokes at the base of the green tower and to flee, seconds before the blast reached her ; Michel M., at 150 m from the shed, felt his bike vibrating and fell ; Anne G., who was thrown to a wall and whose two colleagues fell because of a tremor at only 500 m from the B221, a few seconds before the blast ; M. A., who at 3000 m from B221, felt a tremor at least 11 s before the blast.

A selection of other statements : one of the most commented is of a number of AZF staff, who were in a computer room, in the midst of AZF ; when they suddenly felt the slabs of the floor vibrating so violently, that they fled, along with the occupants of the neighbouring offices. They had enough time to run through a corridor and to go out of the building (appr. 8 to 10 seconds), when the B221 blast hurt them. One of the witnesses explained that when she was running, the slabs were loose. ( http://toulouse.azf4.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?t=273 )
Adrien L.-N., near Door A (deposition D1390), 150 m from the crater, was thrown to the ground, a few seconds before the blast. At this distance, it would be impossible to perceive any phenomenon coming from the crater other than the supersonic schockwave.
Similarly, Pascal B. was at building I4, at the core of the ammonitrate area, 150 m to the south of the crater. He heard an explosion, felt a quake, 3 seconds later, felt the great explosion (D1050).
Pierre-Yves L., a SNPE engineer (D0947 : http://www.azf-10h18.com/SNPE/Temoin%20 ... %20Roy.gif ), after he heard a first detonation, simultaneously with a power cut, felt the building shaking. He had the time to hide under a table, a few seconds later was hurt by the big explosion.
Veterinarian Jean-Yves G., was auscultating a poodle at his office, 51 rte d'Espagne, 1200 m north of the crater. Suddenly the dog stiffened, reacting to something ; 1 to 3 seconds later, he heard an explosion, and simultaneously felt the ground shaking ; 4 to 10 seconds later, a second, big explosion. It seems the dog felt a P or S wave, before J.-Y. G. felt the surface waves ; too many seconds before the B221 blast for them to come from it. (AZFEA p.14 and 155, D4432).

But the area east of Pech David, near the Rangeuil Hospital, is singular. First, the material damage to the hospital. Walls were fractured and moved. It is a true smoking gun. At 2.5 km from the crater, this major damage can't be linked to the blast. Testimonies depict violent vertical moves in the area. This is corroborated by the fact that the time lapse separating the tremor from the perception of the explosion is greater than elsewhere. Many depositions spoke of 12-30 seconds, according to the position. An example is that of Mrs F., a student at Rangueil (D2895). Who was attending a class at an amphiteater, when it shook violently. Her and the other students could hear a din from an amphiteater on an upper floor. It lasted 1 to 3 seconds. Then, all was normal again, the incident was becoming a part of the past. When they heard a big explosion. She was clear that the gap was at least of 12-16 seconds ; and not 6 to 7 seconds, if the two had the same origin at B221.
http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_EPICENTRE-V.html

Interestingly, this is the same area where Germans had underground military installations to stock heavy water. Installations seemingly re-used by the French later.

So what was the cause ?
Remarkably, this mystery is not without precedent. On 6 October 1999, a quake happened ( http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_FABIUS-IV.html (go to #4) ) at sea, near Dieppe and Fécamp. Its magnitude was around 4.5 - 4.6 Richter. An investigation was conducted, but quickly dropped. It claimed that it was simply the result of the controlled explosion of appr. 1.2 tons of explosives aboard wrecks from the Second World War. Clearly, it makes no sense : a magnitude of 4.5 is equivalent to 5000 t of TNT ! And who was the expert seismologist in charge of the study ? Annie Souriau ! Interestingly, Daniel Dissy reveals that she had been involved in the writing in 1977 of a report on the ways of distinguishing the seismic recordings of a natural quake, a chemical explosion and an atomic explosion (AZFTQV, p.114)...

This could be a nuclear test. The same explanation was suggested for a number of tremors near Gardanne (in the region of Marseilles), registered at 3 on the Richter scale. Notably by Jean-Pierre Petit ( http://www.onnouscachetout.com/themes/n ... e-jpp1.php , http://www.jp-petit.org/Proces_diffamat ... presse.htm ). He claims that a director of the Nuclear Center of Marcoule, and former assistant director of the CEA-DAM, Antoine GIUDICELLI, asserted him in 2000 that such tests took place. Those tremors are certainly suspect : if the official explanation is that they are the result of the collapse of the roof of a mine, this is ruled out by the fact that they all took place at the same place, 1000 m deep. Journalist Jean-Yves Cashga found evidence that the CEA was conducting radioactivity measurings in the area. As a result, Antoine Giudicelli tried to sue Petit for libel in July 2002, denying he had ever said such a thing. The suit was dismissed for a technicality. But a potential link with the Toulouse disaster may have been found. Jean-Pierre Petit had put forward the theory that the energy from the detonation of a subterranean nuclear or atomic device could be used to fuel electromagnetic weapons, like e-bombs or energy beam weapons. Reminiscent of what many people witnessed.

The discrete military installations could well have been a place of experimentations. Involving a small nuclear bomb ? Or heavy water stocked decades ago ? The ONIA (precursor to AZF) started its production officially only in 1958 for the CEA. It was stocked to the south, on an old military site along the Garonne. Officially, not a single gram of heavy water remained near AZF. But when Daniel Dissy tried to know when and how it had been removed from Toulouse, no-one could answer him... (AZFES p.129). Or alternative energies ? Is it why some witnesses of the deadly incident reported at the SNPE in the early morning related that they had time to speak to the less wounded of the two unidentified victims. And that he answered them that he was working with AREVA (the government-owned nuclear firm, famous for its opacity and its propensity to bribe officials from foreign countries). There are many interesting leads. But, even if these tests were supposed to be of a relatively low level, they would be foolish. And a tempting target...

Other possible experiments related to new sources of energy and weapons may have involved water conducts. Among them the Sphinx experiments, a kind of cold fusion, following supposed trials conducted at Sandia between 1997 and 2004. Involving "ion viscous heating in magnetohydrodynamically unstable z-pinch", researched by Pr Malcolm Haines, http://209.85.135.132/search?q=cache:MY ... en&ct=clnk , http://209.85.135.132/search?q=cache:Ua ... en&ct=clnk . They hope to reach a temperature of 2 billions K ! Similar works were conducted by engineer Mathias Bavay at Gramat (200 km north of Toulouse). The heating of water is involved in seismic weapons too.
Is there a link with the state of the boiler room ? It is used for the production of electricity. According to Guillaume d'Allessandro, the firm Elyo Océan is in charge. Curiously, the building was in works at the time, an employee claimed shortly after the disaster there were tests, but could not specify which ones.
(D2087 : http://www.azf-10h18.com/SNPE/Temoin%20 ... Pointu.gif

"Q: Were the co-generation turbines working the day of the explosion ?
A : No, they were stopped. THey were conducting tests.
Q : What kind of tests ?
A : We had finished our ventilation shaft, and they were closing the inspection trap door, the manhole used to proceed to tests. I don't know what kind of tests they were.
.....
Q : Did you perceive a power cut before the explosion.
A : Well, the explosion took place almost at the same time I put the wheel. It was stopped when it happened.
Q : According to you, is there a possibility that the 21 September explosion originated inside the SNPE ?
A : In my opinion, the time when they did the trials and the explosion coincide. They were shuting the trap door.
Q :According to our informations, people from ELYO were conducting trials on the gas burners of a boiler room called MIDREC, the boiler room of the co-generation. What do you think of that ?
A : You're learning me that they were conducting tests on the burners. I am surprised because to start burners, normally gas is needed and I was working on a piping I was intending to fix on a gas pipe. Now, I don't know their system, it is possible there is a double conduct, that would make it possible. To me, there was no gas in the conducts as we had stopped the flow to the boiler room on the side of the co-generation turbines, and that, to perform works. Or more exactly changes.
Q : Have you got something to add that would be of interest to the present inquiry ?
A : No, except that I find strange that it blew up exactly at the time the ELYO people were conducting their tests." )

Part of the damages noted in various places could have been the result of a pressure wave travelling through underground tunnels, linking underground facilities, erupting under the SNPE ; similarly, the release of energy could have been transmitted to underground conducts, resulting in the boiling of water and their bursting ; an ebb of water injected under high pressure would have similar effects. Possible explanations for the damage at the SNPE boiling room and maybe at the Lilas pumping plant, and for some rumblings or sounds of underground explosions heard by a number of witnesses.

In his last book, Daniel Dissy goes farther, and puts forward a theory based on a chain of events. An electric disturbance, caused by an unknown explosion, following an unidentified subterranean incident, would result in the boiling of water in underground conducts, via a Foucault effect (induced currents). He focused on the mysterious dark trench. http://danieldissy.net/AZF-catastrophe/ ... ar-221.php http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_CRATERE-III.html Promptly erased, and whose existence was vehemently denied. It was in a line with the Ets Brossette shop, the Escaragol clubhouse, the location of the dead elevator repairman. The main problem remains the same than with previous electric explanations. A release of current to earth wouldn't result in a sufficient transfer of energy. Guillaume D'Alessandro and Pierre Grésillaud suppose a possible vector : an old array of buried cables ; its existence is unclear, but possible, given the opacity of the SNPE and EDF.
What is certain is the existence of an old water conduct under the shed. Although its existence was almost never mentionned, including by Grande Paroisse and Total. And a policeman who braved the ban to enter the perimeter of the factory on the 21 september did notice the presence of water on the flanks of the crater (AZFES p.191).
In his hypothesis, given the probably bad state of the old conduct, a powerful jet stream erupted trough a small hole thanks to a Venturi effect (as in a Kärcher), and travelled under the stab ; it dug the trench, came into contact with three 6,2 kV buried power cables linking the and T36 transformers. The mark enlarged at this place, and when it came in contact with the railroad. The electricity released burned the ground. It probably touched the AN crust, fused and not in grains, and so more explosive. If the energy of more than 100 kJ was transmitted to the core of the stack, it may have resulted in an explosion, thanks to self-confinement. It would explain that the detonation seemed to come from below. At the same time, the melted and hot nitrate of the green tower, more unstable, detonated due to an electric arc or a beam.
http://azf.danieldissy.net/AZF-Toulouse ... ernale.php
His theory looks like a convincing explanation of the black mark. For the main explosion, it may seem workable, if the energy reached the core ; but he seems to suppose that the crust would behave like a wick, highly unlikely (although the confinement of the crust under the stack could help it to act as a wick). It leaves many questions unanswered. From the possible damage on the roof when the stack ignited (melted nitrate expelled from the green tower ? plausible, but not as the cause of the H221 explosion), to the origin of the disaster ; as Dissy admits, it leaves open the question of a voluntary or accidental cause for the first incidents. Overall, there is recent more evidence for an act of sabotage in the shed. And there is an uncanny feature : in the continuation of the mark, on the parking of the SIS, the way crossed a car immatriculated in Germany. A car belonging to Hassan J.

While the trial was used by some to support the absence of evidence for a terrorist event, in fact, it helped to evidence the weakness of arguments used by the prosecution, supported by the controversial judiciary experts Daniel Van Schendel and Didier Bergues. It was relatively easy for a saboteur to hide behind the stack to dig a hole and bury a bomb. The provocations of Hassan J. and his companions could have been intended as a diversion. No trace of the detonator and other devices would probably be left (let's not forget the experts had supported that the roof had been vaporized !). And it unearthed evidence new or until then disregarded, relating to the possible implication of the suspected workers.
One of the highlights was the deposition of police officers Alain Cohen, Jean-Louis Burle and Jacky Elbez, who depicted how they were prevented to investigate the terrorist lead. Three police officers testifying against their hierarchy and the prosecution was certainly a very unusual fact. It only angered prosecutor Michel, who had the nerve to accuse them of lacking of dispatch - now this was their fault if the search had been delayed ! And of not having alerted their hierarchy. As they were under orders from Michel Bréard, who had threatened Marc Mennessier of becoming the next victim of the disaster, this seems like a bad joke.

Silence, on glisse. Vers quoi au juste ? L’accident, pardi !

Nadia M.'s statement was another example of the poor handling of the evidence. Her many inconsistencies were not noticed. As for her first answers to the police, she came with a convenient explanation : she was under tranquilizers, hence an erratic behaviour and inconsistent answers. She said that she had given her husband's clothes to a relative, contradicting herself once more, claiming previously that she had dropped them (but well she was under tranquilizers...). And for a brief instant she worried the court, by explaining that she had given his papers to two policemen. Was there another search ? The court probably felt relieved when she ended her deposition, afraid that she would commit another blopper. It seems too that her memory is still affected by the drugs she took, as she stood to her assertion that her husband weighed only 55 kg. Not only hers, but of the whole ; Hassan J.'s uncle even asserted that he had tried every remedy to put on weight, to no avail. But, no : reports and photos from both hospitals show that he weighed at least 70 kg (no matter if the two bodies were of the same person or not). Certainly, in a normal trial, such explanations would never be taken seriously.

Karim Ben Driss (aka "Ali") 's powerful testimony was another highlight, notably of the presence of an unidentified man among the TMG staff. He was precise and consistent, nor the prosecutor nor the court could intimidate him. Not even the police officer who had "advised" him to keep his mouth shut. After having related his quarrel with Hassan J., he reported that a mustached man, of Maghrebin origin, was with him. A police officer had tried to mislead him saying that this man was Aberrasack Tahiri, using old and bad photos ; but he was adamant that this was someone else. Until now, no-one could identify him. As for Hassan J.'s outfit, Ben Driss was clear : he couldn't have worn so many underpants. No matter what his relatives said.

But when he was autopsied, he had them. What happened ? And what of his change of eye color ? Of his clean t-shirt ?

To be complete, the forensic expert involved in the second autopsy was Dr Danièle ALENGRIN. She had been heavily a subject of controversy for her part in the Patrice Alègre affair. Alègre is a former procureur and serial-killer, who was convicted to a life sentence in 2002 for six murders and rapes http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affaire_Al%C3%A8gre . He was and remains strongly suspected of working for political criminal nets. And a number of the deaths of his other putative victims were ruled as suicids by Dr Alengrin, despite massive counter-evidence. For example, Gilbert Collard and Edouard Martial report in their book L'Etrange Affaire Allègre the case of Valérie Tariote. She was found dead with her hands tied, gagged with a scarf tied behind her head, a rag pushed into her mouth, and under a massive dose of tranquilizers ; but D. Allengrin concluded it was a suicide... He has faced for years attemtps to reopen these cases. Dr Alengrin was too involved in the fraudulent investigation of Judge Bernard Borrel death, ruling as a suicide what is now widely accepted as a murder. Aware that she is heavily discredited, Judge Perriquet thought wiser not to mention her in his ordnance (AZFEA p.37)...

Another testimony to add weight to the presence of unidentified workers was that of Réjane Boucly, secretary at TMG.

'Strangely, a number of people notice mists around the SNPE perimeter.'
Dust combustion on a large scale? I've done the party trick with powdered milk poured from a height & ignited at the bottom of the resulting powder/air mix. Goodness knows what this would be like with a huge cloud of nitrate dust!

An explosion of dust couldn't account for the detonation of ammonim nitrate. But an UVCE could be part of the disaster (see posts 24-3 and 25-3). And it is certain that the SNPE was in a poor state, and deserved to be called a dustbin.

http://www.tvagri.com/azf/forum/index.p ... ,11.0.html http://moreas.blog.lemonde.fr/proces-az ... ronique-8/
Réjane Boucly had two important kinds of infos to add. She was the woman who faced H. J. when he tried to enlist one of his friends who refused to give his name (already mentioned). This man was later identified as Smaïn Brih. His behaviour was certainly strange : not only he refused to give his identity for three days, and to contact the security, but too to fill any hiring form. So, he wished to work for free... An aside : she maintains that Jandoubi was speaking arabic, contradicting his family. She maintains that his body was buried, and was found by a firefighter's dog, contradicting the police statement.
She had a list of TMG temporary workers. Two of them simply vanished after 21 September. When she asked one of the team directors who they were, he couldn't answer, and none his colleagues knew more. Her superior told her to mind her own business.
This side of her testimony adds to the numerous depositions that investigators refused to study. For other examples, Jean-Louis M., a TMG employee, said that three AZF firefighters (they were used as security guards) were running after four fugitives along the wire fence boarding the Route d'Espagne, just prior to the disaster (deposition D0361). Or an incident at a Bricomarché shop, related by a number of witnesses, like Francis B. (D4462). The shop was evacuated for a "bomb alert", about 3 mn before the explosions. Or there is the mention by M. Mennessier that one of the dead TMG workers had his throat slit. And why were there soldiers inside the factory in the afternoon of 21 September, despite denials ? Not very numerous, but they were there : http://geopolintel.kazeo.com/AZF-l-hist ... 76090.html .
The other side referred to the intimidation attempts she had to suffer. Many witnesses had to suffer pressure, like harsh interrogation (J.-P. Mayer reported that a former paratrooper could withstand the pressure only thanks to his military training). This time, it was actual threats, not an isolated occurence. She issued two depositions. Jean-Pierre Bellaval and his team (again) tried to made her change her testimony. One of them that if she persisted, they would send Patrice Allègre after her. Not a threat anyone in Toulouse would take lightly... She added later that she had heard that two bodies remained unidentified, but was warned that asking more questions about them could be dangerous.
Once more, nor the judges nor the prosecution saw anything reprehensible in the police behaviour. At least, like K. Ben Driss (who had been "kindly" warned to shut up), she refused to be intimated and came to testify. The same can't be told of all witnesses who were threatened. For example, Jennifer Zeyen is the daughter of Jacques Zeyen, the only SNPE employee who died this day. He was found under a fallen metallic door in buiding 290 http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_SNPE-VIII.html (go to#1). Photos of the buiding show a hole in its roof. He was evacuated to the Rangueil Hospital, where he died shortly after. One of his colleague went with him in the ambulance, and noticed that it took an unexplained detour, and not the shortest path, via the Chemin des Etroits ; this delay may have been fatal to Jacques Zeyen ; it is consistent with statements of a cordon in the area around 11 am. His daughter noted that he had a small wound just above the nape, seemingly incompatible with the direction of the main blast ; other evidence of another explosion. It was unmentioned in the autopsy conducted by Dr Alengrin. As was the fact that his legs had been badly hurt. She was troubled by a number of other anomalies, notably that the evacuation had taken place too late, for an unexplained reason. She wished to ask for a new autopsy. Immediately (suggesting she was phone-taped), she received phone threats, stating that her and her children would be hurt if she persisted. Her children were indeed threatened by an unknown man on their way from school. She issued a complaint at the local gendarmery, the threats ceased. But she remained afraid, and refused to come to testify. http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_SNPE-VIII.html
Did this go sometimes farther ? It's certainly possible. The most striking example is of Dr M., an A&E doctor, one of the first to be present near the crater. She was claiming loudly that it was a terrorist attack, she would tell what she had seen, and that no-one would silence her. A few days later, she was found dead in the Garonne. Unsurprisingly, it was officially called a suicide... (AZFSE p.266). French justice is notoriously unable to distinguish a suicide from a murder.
Independant researchers and journalists were too subject to various kinds of harassment.

Apart from the multiple attempts of judicial intimidations, there was petty harassment. Pr Arnaudiès had his computer hacked on many occasions. Daniel Dissy's first website was hacked, pages remained unavalaible until he changed its presentation. Other faced what looks like schemes found in many instances of abuse from mean police agencies. Nicknamed "officines", they have plagued France since centuries. Pierre Grésillaud and J.-C. Tirat were victims of attempts to frame them in the second AZF terrorist group (called AZF 3 affair ; it is less known than the first terrorist group to call itself "AZF" - more on that later). Grésillaud's example is a typical manipulation : he faced a complaint of unidentified origin, who claimed that he had said he was a member of the group. The supposed author of the complaint, Jean Bocognani, mayor of Le Vernet, denied that he had ever filed it. But his computers had been seized, and their contents copied. To others it was typical "barbouzeries" ("barbouze" is a nickname for secret agents from the DGSE, formerly SDECE), from tailing to burglaries. Anne-Marie Casteret had her flat visited in January 2002. They were true professionals, and left no trace of housebreaking. They took only her hardware and some files, but left her money untouched - despite it was in a drawer they had opened. In May 2002, an expert working for the civil investigation similarly had some of his computers stolen.

Use of illegal methods was not restricted to silence witnesses or dissuade investigations. Workers and chiefs of staff who refused to comply to the official version and admit a neglicence were equally badly treated to obtain false confessions. Jean-Louis Panel, Richard Mole, supervisor of subcontractors in the chlorine compounds workshop (ACD), and Georges Paillas were pressured in a way that should be called torture. Mole was left in a cell for 26 hours, with a bottle of dirty water. Hurt and on the verge of fainting, Panel was isolated in a room of Marchant hospital for 12 hours and later interrogated harshly, no doctor was allowed to see him. It was written in his confession that he had told that contaminated AN was unloaded in the stab, what he denied vigourously to have said. But in the state he was, he was ready to sign anything to end it. Paillas, seriously hurt by the explosion, his wounds just stitched up, was interrogated while he was under morphin. His family wasn't allowed to administer him his drugs. After having suffered this indignity, Panel and Paillas will have to face an indictment one year later. And the prosecution dared to use their "confessions", despite that it is strictly forbidden by the Convention Against Torture.

These various statements reinforced the terrorist lead. The body of evidence is indeed good. But what does this mean ? We know that a number of persons, at least some of them seem to have been 'islamists', were present ; that they had a strange and threatening behaviour, this very day and the previous days. And the authorities tried everything at their disposal to deny those facts. All independant investigations agree on that. But a number of things don't add up. Terrorists would likely not alert loudly of what was going to happen and catch clumsily attention on them. And if it was possible for them to act in such a foolish way without getting caught at first, it was only because the AZF factory had been unexplicably "forgotten" when the anti-terrorist alert had been put in place. Many would answer "incompetence" or "negligence". Well, it seems a strange virus was at work, there was a true worldwide pandemic of incompetence in September 2001. Moreover, these islamists couldn't be at the origin of the various events, the multiple explosions, the electro-magnetic and luminous phenomena, a quake at more than 3 Richter... Once more, the supposed 'terrorists' look like pawns. For those reasons, a number of independant investigators have come to see the case as a "French Kursk".

One of the remarkable features of the affair is that despite the blatant silliness of the official version, the whole political class and the media remain so silent and don't lead their own inquiries. Or even more strikingly that they don't comment at all about the investigations and the trial. While many would say that it isn't possible in an 'open' and 'democratic' society, it's exactely what's happening. Is it really so anomalous ? France doesn't have a good reputation when it comes to checks and balances. Indeed, many cases show that such a collusion of mediatic, political and judiciary powers is not so unusual after all within its borders (not that it's impossible outside). And that government tactics are well tried and tested. Among the most striking examples are that of :

- the slaughter of Algerians by the police in Paris on 17 and 18 october 1961 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_massacre_of_1961 http://www.fantompowa.net/Flame/algeria ... rticle.htm ) ; the true number of victimes remains controversial, from 40 to 400 ; but despite the amounts of atrocities, the public was not informed of what happened in the middle of Paris, and no serious inquiry was conducted ; only the government of Lionel Jospin admitted the slaughter in 1998 ; the same year, another event was very revealing of the behaviour of the justice : a court dismissed a suit for libel from Maurice Papon, prefect of police of Paris during the events, against historian Jean-Luc Einaudi ; 38 years after them, as Papon had already become a proscribed (he had been convicted in 1998 for crimes against humanity for his involvment in the deportation of Jews during the Second World War), this was hardly a great act of courage...

- the coming of the Chernobyl radioactive cloud in 1986. Authorities announced that it had not reached France (press release of the Minister of Agriculture on 6 May, various releases on public TV resorts) http://www.sortirdunucleaire.org/index. ... page=index . It was truly an astonishing assertion, every other Western European country being affected and taking restrictions on agricultural products ; but for some reason, the cloud had stopped at the French border ! They slighly changed their tale a few days later, but the new version was almost as treacherous as the former : rejects had reached France, but the radioactivity of the clouds did not exceed the natural amount, meaning that they were almost not more radioactive than the average cumulus ! Pr Pierre Pellerin, head of the SCPRI (Service Central de Protection contre les Rayons Ionisants), who had already said that "no significant rise in radioactivity was observed", only conceded that levels remained well below critical levels : "rises should be ten thousand or a hundred thousand times more important for a significant public sanitary danger to happen". On 10 May, a new change in his claims : he admitted that they came close to safety limits, but there was still no danger. So that the general consensus in the media remained that nothing significant had reached France. Astonishingly, the French government (directed by Prime Minister Chirac) worked to prevent any sanitary restrictions from the European Community, and to fight those taken in other countries. Worse, they advised against the use of stable iodine in Eastern European countries, claiming that it was unnecessary beyond a few tens of km from the Tchernobyl plant ( http://www.hns-info.net/article.php3?id_article=8580 ).
In June, science monthly Science & Vie (issue 825) had already established the official assertions were pure hogwash. They had found that the SCPRI employees had been forbidden to speak, but they had access to the true readings from a number of plants and nuclear centers. At the nuclear center of Saclay, detectors showed that during the night from 1 to 2 May, the concentration of iodine 131 had reached 74 becqerel per cube meter of air, 10 times the amount given by the SCPRI ("coincidentaly" the critical level). At the nuclear center of Cadarache, the concentration of iodine 131 in rainwater was of 1.111 becqerel per liter, five times the critical level. But their findings were not taken up by the other media. The lie became unsustainable years later, notably when an analysis of boars in the Vosges mountain in December 1996 revealed a radioactivity of 2000 becqerel per kg of meat, 200 times the natural level.
15 years later, a judiciary investigation was at last conducted, following complaints from a number of people afflicted with thyroid cancer. It seized important evidence providing confirmation that the Chirac government had deliberately lied ; like an unsigned note from the Minister of Interior dated 16 May 1986, stating "we have readings that can't be published" ; the same note asked local prefects to try to discourage any local and private measurements of radioactivity. They confirmed too that the map of radioactive levels released by the SCPRI to the media in May 1986 was a complete hoax. But it remains almost impossible to prove a relationship between an illness and the coming of the cloud in individual cases. As for Pr Pellerin, he remained at the head of the SCPRI (renamed OPRI - Office de Protection contre les Rayonnements Ionisants - in 1994) until he retired. Such a conspiracy may seem too silly and visible to happen ; it certainly is silly and visible, but it did happen, with few contesting. And is still happening, as André-Claude LACOSTE, director of the Nuclear Security Agency (Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire or DGSNR, Direction Générale de la Sécurité Nucléaire et de la Radioprotection) dared to say recently that the situation in 1986 had been handled properly !
Both may be called extreme examples, but that makes them only better proofs that such things are possible. And there are many other examples of succesful cover-ups. Involving dubious suicides and accidents, military cock-ups, criminal political nets, and various abuses. A selection of examples shows how the resistance to the reopening of those cases is strong.

Examples of unsolved deaths abound in French political life. This may seem off-topic ; but they provide evidence of how it is easy for the establishment to enforce an official truth, despite its unlikeliness ; and this almost every time it wants, using the same repetitive methods ; of the similarity of methods ; and how those manipulations prove persistent. France has no monopoly on surreal 'suicides' and 'accidents', for example. But the repetitivness of such cases is troubling.

An old undying affair is that of the death by 'suicide' of Robert BOULIN. A gaullist, he had been a minister from 1961 to 1979, except for 3 years (1973-76). Under president Valéry Gicard d'Estaing, he had been associate minister of finances and economy, and then minister of labour and employment. He had left in 1976 the RPR, the gaullist party (formerly the UDR), to join the UDF, the centrist party of president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. He had the reputation of an honnest and straight man. But many gaullists saw him as a traitor.
On the morning 30 october 1979, the gendarmery found his dead body in the pond Rompu, in the forest of Rambouillet.
It was immediately labelled a suicide. A number of politicians explained that he was deeply depressed, following his involvment in a real estate scandal. In fact in this case he was one of the victims. But the crook, Henri TOURNET, a businessman close to the RPR, had tried to implicate him. It may have been indirectly the cause of his death. His relatives and friends stated that he was angered, he thought that he had been tricked, the RPR and a number of his political opponents inside the Barre government tried to use the affair to bersmirch his reputation and discredite him. He was very resolute. He may have thought of retaliation, by revealing embezzlement cases. Having worked for the ministry of finances, he probably knew of a number of incriminating files. He had claimed too he feared for his life.
Anomalies began as soon as his body was found. The pool was only 60 cm deep. He was found with his mouth shut, while drowned persons usually have their mouth open. His shoes and trousers had no mud on them. The doctor who came to certify his death was not allowed to have a close look at his body.
An AFP release said that he had used barbiturics, less than 2 hours after his body was supposedly found. That was too the first police version. But it was inexplicably changed to valium, not a barbituric ; experts say that it seems impossible to commit suicide using only it. It is an anxiolytic. The contact of cold water should have awaken him. And no valium bottle was found near his body or the swamp. The report said that valium was found inside his body, but only in his blood and organs, not in his stomachal cavity ; suggesting it had been injected. No needle was found near him.
His lungs were never examined (essential in the case of a drowning) ; no analysis of the water was conducted, to prove that it came from the swamp. This was made definitely impossible by a series of "clumsiness". A forensic expert had made two swabs of the lungs. One was burried with its jar for no reason in a cemetary dedicated to such remains. When the family asked for a new autopsy in 1983, they wanted to unearth them. They were answered a stele had been erected at its precise location. There was no such stele ! When a judge at last ordered to dig up the swab, it could never be found. The second had been sealed in a refrigerator. When new examinations were asked, it was found that the door of the refrigerator had been broken open, the sample had vanished.
The first autopsy didn't examine his cranium, at the request of the prosecutor of Versailles, close to the RPR. The presence of wounds on his face was widely stated by many independant witnesses and proven by photos ; a journalist used the word swollen. The official reaction was at first to deny ; later, when a second autopsy confirmed them, it shifted : the marks were attributed to a shock against a rock when the body was removed. There was no such rock on the site.
Forensic doctors noticed an additional hemathoma at the base of his cranium. It was not mentionned in the final autopsy report.
The presence of slashes on his wrists were never commented ; they were suggestive that he had been tied up.
His throat, tongue and larynx were without apparent motive removed during the first autopsy, and lost. And so all evidence of a possible strangulation.
That his body had been removed was established by the position of cadaverous lividity on his back. Showing that he died on his back, and not face down.
When his body was unearthed, it was found to be embaulmed, which his family ignored. The persons who oredered it could never be identified.
Letters in which he "announced" his suicide were clearly the combination of two unrelated elements : a typed out sentence, the only part mentionning suicide ; added at the beggining of a long letter in which he explained his version of the real estate scandal. His secretaries stated that letters Boulin had written on his last day had no likeness to these. A postman mentioned that Boulin had posted a number of heavy letters. Their whereabouts remain unknown. Curiously, when a magistrate wished to hear the postman he was answered that he didn't live in metropolitan France anymore (which was later proven as false).
What were the big documents his staff saw him put with him from his office, the day before his death ? Why did neighbourgs sight unknown persons coming and going near the Rambouillet forest this night ? Why did Prime Minister Raymond Barre say and maintain later that he had been woken at 3:00 am to be informed of Boulin's death, while officialy gendarmes found his body only at 8:00 am ?

A comprehensive book was dedicated to this affair : Un homme à abattre : Contre-enquête sur la mort de Robert Boulin of Benoît COLLOMBAT http://www.amazon.fr/Un-homme-abattre-C ... 380&sr=8-1 A good account is found in Morts suspectes sous la Ve République of Patrick PESNOT http://www.amazon.fr/Morts-suspectes-so ... pd_sim_b_8

It is clear that Boulin was murdered. Nonetheless, the great media and the political world were quick to support blindly the official version. Until today, they've been enforcing the same policy of denial, with the help of a friendly justice. And don't count on political rivalries. Giscard d'Estaing and Barre had notoriously uneasy relations with the gaullists ; but they didn't want to confront directly their powerful organisations. As for the left, B. Collombat shows in his book that it saw the affair as a convenient tool of blackmail against the right ; and so had no interest in solving the case. While more recently a number of articles and TV programmes were dedicated to this affair, the majority of the main media remains as close-minded as before, and do their best to prevent any reopening of the case. They don't want to admit they were wrong. It would be too damageable to their credibility and their usual "it can't happen in a democracy" line.

Their reluctance is partially due to the fear to reveal that whole parts of the Fifth Republic are rotten. In a country riffled with "barbouzeries" and abuses, Boulin's death is only one of many unsolved cases, and may be linked to the wrongdoings who followed the coming of De Gaulle. Many of them are tied to the neocolonial net of French politicians and businessmen, and African despots, made of corruption, coups d'Etats and embezzlement, called the "Françafrique". A major financial source of wealth for the French political class, with the help of corrupt local rulers and at the expense of African people. That the recently deceased Omar Bongo, ruler of Gabon for 38 years, financed the RPR was an open secret. De Gaulle built this wide criminal net to monopolize the resources of former French Africa (well, former is probably not the right word, as it remained embedded to the colonizer). One of his main tools was the petrol company Elf, conceived as a vector to control local policies, to foment coups and to harvest occult money. While it is seldom mentioned, this is one of the greatest conspiracies of the 20th century.

The same corruption and violence plagued internal political life. One of its main actors was the SAC (Service d'Action Civique), De Gaulle's parallel police. The collusion of the SAC with gangsters, former military and extremists was well known. Its founder, Jacques FOCCART, was one of the main men behind the Françafrique. It was accused to use racket and hold-ups for its financing. Its occult actions resulted in a number of slaughters. Its involvment is suspected in Boulin's death, and in several suspect accidents, like the drowning of Michel COUTANT (March 1972), the road accident of RPR MP Charles BIGNON (who might have been involved in the death of Boulin), the death in a plane crash of René JOURNIAC, in charge of African policy at the Elysée (6 February 1980) ; or the murder of judge RENAUD (who inspired the main character of Yves Boisset's movie Judge Fayard called the Sheriff http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076242/ ). It may have had a hand, directly or indirectly, in the unsolved murders of two former ministers, Jean DE BROGLIE (24 December 1976) and Joseph FONTANET (1 February 1980). Its ban in 1982 didn't halt skulduggerry.

With respect Analis, what is the destination that you are driving to? Your posts are detailed & erudite but they're expanding to events much broader than the AZF disaster. If your intention is to test your theories in the public domain in preparation for the publishing of a book then, I say, good luck to you. If, however, you're obsessively trying to find evidence to support an a priori conclusion then I have to wonder about the sensibleness of that?
Even the briefest check on Google shows that ammonium nitrate explosions happen every now & then all over the world. It's just a volatile substance, as are a lot of the components of fertiliser?

I'm in agreement with shruggy63 . Analis, I'm sure all the other posters on this thread are as impressed as I am by your research but I'm still not sure where you're going with this.
Was it terrorists? Was it an orchestrated false flag operation? Was it the accidental result of some gross criminal negligence? Was some sort of secret electronic Tesla technology being used?
I assume when you say 'reactor' you actually mean 'engine'.At least I hope you do !

Ammonium nitrate is not volatile. It may seem to be involved in many accidents. But keep in mind that it is a very common compound. The rate of accidents is very low. Otherwise it would have been banned long ago. A disaster needs very precise conditions. Recently, on 30 July, at Bryan in Texas (USA), inside a El Dorado Chemical Company plant, a warehouse containing an estimated 557 tons of AN burned. From videos, it seems that the combustion was almost complete ; but it didn't explode.
And an interesting picture : a firefighter cuts the metal sheet of an AN containeer. The compound is spread everywhere. Don't worry, nothing happened to him !

[EDIT : are you confusing with a self-sustained AN fire ? A different phenomenon, but much feared by firefighters, as it can make an AN fire virtually unstoppable]

I have no intent to write a book. I come with no definitive explanation. There are so many sides to this case that it is difficult to have a clear idea of what happened. The only certainty being that the official version is pure bollocks. The discussion on the Tesla-like technology, for example, is interesting, because while we know that such technology is studied, testimonies are very rare. But yes, my opinion is that an orchestrated false flag attack seems the most likely. Although in this case, it would be more like an act of war, a wide-scale sabotage (including of classified facilities). A regular terrorist attack can't explain everything. Gross criminal negligence often comes unpunished when the military is involved, I'm coming with a few examples. But it too leaves too many areas unanswered.

If I dedicate a few posts to a number of other cases, it's to show how the treatment of this affair, far from unique, is in line with the usual practice. Some may have indirect ties ; and they sometimes involve the same people. AZF includes too dubious suicides and accidents, and intimidation. A forensic expert who helped to make murders look like suicides was involved. I suppose the authorities know how to select their investigators. Others could have a more direct link. But overall, they show that the process at work at a socio-political level to produce denial and collective amnesia is quite common.

This is examplified by two cases remarkably similar to the death of Robert Boulin, who took place later. President Mitterrand had promised to moralize politics, but his reign was the demonstration that the same kind of manipulations were perpetrated by all sides of the political world. After an impressive number of financial and political scandals, it ended by two deaths who were promptly labelled suicide. But displayed all signs of murders. In all cases, the official explanation was taken up by the mediatico-political and judiciary worlds with the same ease. The first was of former socialist Prime Minister Pierre BEREGOVOY :

Two books give a good account : Un crime d'Etat ?
=pd_cp_b_1

On 1 May 1993, Pierre Bérégovoy was found by his driver and his bodyguard dying along a warping way, along a canal near Nevers. A bullett had been shot in his head (or was it two ?). He died shortly after he was transferred to the Hospital of Nevers. The official releases quickly established that he had commited suicide, by stealing his bodyguard's gun (a 9 mm Manhurin Magnum 357) and firing in his temple. He was widely depicted as deeply depressive, because of a press campaign against him. Mitterrand called the journalists 'dogs'.
While all testimonies from his relatives are not sure if he was really depressive, it seems he was in a psychic turmoil, and felt affected by a number of accusations against him. Notably for a loan with a 0% rate from the controversial millionaire Roger-Patrice PELAT. There was probably nothing illegal in it, but it was politically damaging, because Pelat had been involved in various financial scandals (notably the Pechiney affair, a case of insider trading). He felt too responsible for the defeat of his party at the general elections of March 1993, and resented Mitterrand and other socialists. But he feared too for his life. His secretary said that when he left her a few weeks before his death, he gave him a letter to send to his relatives, if he was not to come back. He was back ten minutes later. We don't know who he met in-between http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5b7gw ... -beregovoy . His situation was similar to Boulin's. He certainly knew of incriminating files on many people. He felt the target of a destabilization campaign, and named speculators in the entourage of Mitterrand and political rivals. He had told sometimes that he could answer. Like Boulin's, his death was preceded and followed by burglaries.
The official version was blindly repeated by the press. But anomalies quickly emerged. Two fire shots were heard. Some witnesses, notably rescuers, his driver and his bodyguard, uncannily changed their claims. The 1st May 1993, the gendarmes of Nevers were "sure" that he had been found in his car ; they confirmed it live to the television. There were holes in the reconstruction of his timetable His bodyguard and his driver issued surreal testimonies that he had tried two times to commit suicide this day, notably by trying to jump in front of a non-existant train. They gave two conflicting versions of how he had held the gun, or when he killed himself. In the last version, they were not with him at the time of his death, Bérégovoy had left his car to walk along the canal, while his driver was going to fetch his bodyguard (who had left his gun in the glove compartments). Curiously, Minister of the Interior Charles PASQUA (himself deeply buried in various scandals) put his weight into the balance for the bodyguard not to be sanctionned, despite that he had commited a severe midsdeed.
While it was said that no-one was present at the site of the death, a woman related how she had seen Bérégovoy's car driving very quickly along the towing path, stopping abruptly, the driver and the bodyguard coming out quickly, as if they knew where the victim was. But Bérégovoy's body, located in a deep ditch covered with high weeds, could not be seen from the path http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5b7z4 ... -beregovoy .
No serious inquiry could be conducted at Nevers. Bérégovoy's body was quickly transferred to the Val-de-Grâce Hospital at Paris, where he was examined by Dr Dominique Lecompte (involved in the Bernard Borrel's case). The results of the autopsy have never been released, not even to Bérégovoy's wife, nor the scans.
And the most important : the wounds do not support the official version. From the photos and some testimonies, it is in the front, at the summit of his head ; a rather strange location; and the hole is much too small for a Magnum 357. It would have blown his cranium. When the firefighters came, he was still alive. Not possible with this kind of gun. Some forensic experts reported that they couldn't see any exit hole. And there was no trace of holes on his temples.

From the evidence, it seems that Bérégovoy was murdered. The media had their usual sheepish behaviour. Former France 2 newcaster Bruno MASURE made a very revealing comment : he admitted he simply repeated what official sources told him ; as a journalist, he explained he had no way to check http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5b6y2 ... -beregovoy . From there, the official truth went unchallenged. Attempts to put it into question are met with much resistance. The modus operandi of collective amnesia is always the same. A documentary on France 3 was allowed, but came close to be deprogrammed.
A very similar case was that of the counsellor of Mitterrand, François de GROSSOUVRE, who was found dead at his office at the Elysée on 7 April 1994. It was labelled a suicide, despite contrary evidence.

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7 ... Grossouvre
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7 ... Grossouvre
"Suicide" d'Etat à l'Elysée, la mort incroyable de François de Grossouvre de Eric Raynaud http://www.amazon.fr/Suicide-lElys%C3%A ... 941&sr=1-1

His body was found sitting, his head had been supposedly blowned by the bullett of a 357 Magnum gun. To explain his death, the Elysée used the same tactic than with Bérégovoy : he was deeply depressive, and committed suicide. This was vehemently denied by relatives and his doctor, who ruled out any suicidal tendencies. But reported he had said that he feared for his life. Once more, his death was preceded and followed by burglaries. The suicide version was widely acknowledged by the press (with the exception of pamphleteer Jean MONTALDO). Despite these elements, and others which are incompatible with the official version.
He had a luxation on his left shoulder, despite that he was sitting. It couldn't be the result of the kick of his weapon, and he was right-handed. He had a bruise on his face. The fireshot was not heard ; despite that his office was not soundproof, and that a guard stood at less than 6 m from him. Many of his files had vanished from his office. And his children were issued anonymous threats not to investigate.
There was no serious investigation ; the Elysée staff was not properly questionned. No ballistic study took place, the autopsy was performed again dy Dr Lecomte.
Like Bérégovoy, his links with Mitterrand had loosened, he criticized the importance of nets of corrupt speculators around the president, and he had probably access to many files about them. There are other possible motives to his murder. He was a leader of the Rose-des-Vents, the French stay-behind army, and had a great knowledge of secret services. He was involved too in French policy in Rwanda. There, we come to an intriguing coincidence : the day before de Grossouvre's death, Rwandan President Juvenal Habyiarimana and his colleague from Burundi had been killed in an attack on their plane. It was the beginning of the Rwandan genocide. The attackers have not been identified. The role played by France remains controversial. It is possible that de Grossouvre knew some things incriminating about it.

There were other instances of dubious suicides, including the death of René LUCET, a social security director, in 1982 ; or DGSE agent Bernard Nut in 1983. In 1991, Judge Laurence VICHNIEVSKY wrote, to justify her decision to close the investigation over Robert Boulin's death : "unless we are to believe in the existence of a wide conspiracy". A sentence remarkably similar to the one used to dismiss dissenting opinions about the supposed suicide of judge Bernard BORREL. At least in this case, the manipulation was revealed, but only years later after the justice had validated the version supported by French and Djiboutian executives. The media are trying to do as if this didn't take place. The m.o. was the same : he had been depressed, he felt deeply affected, such a conspiracy is impossible etc... But he was murdered.
Following searches carried out at the Ministry of Justice (and a failed attempt at the Elysée), former director of the Elysée cell for African Affairs Michel de Bonnecorse was accused of obstructing justice (but Chirac remains untouchable, because the Constitution puts him above the law). It remains to be seen if he'll be convicted. The case was reported by the media in an unusually low key fashion, except when they pilloried the judges for trying to search at the Elysée. And we still don't know why and by who Borrel was murdered. Two Djiboutian officials, a general prosecutor and the head of intelligence, had been convicted by contumax by a French court in 2007 ; but they appealed and were cleared on 28 May 2009.

..along a warping way
That sounds very Star Trek!

It had me baffled for a bit, but I reckon you mean "tow path", as it was alongside a canal.
(A tow rope can be called a warp, as moving a boat with ropes is known as warping.)

I'm not a chemist so I don't know what the test is that makes a substance officially 'volatile', but I do know that under certain conditions & in contact with other factors ('reactors'? chemical or otherwise) ammonium sulphate can start to burn. If it's in a confined space then it will become an explosive?
If the piles of possibly badly kept (which chimes with Analis' correct suggestion of bad zoning?) chemical ended up being washed into drains then that becomes an unfortunately powerful pipe bomb. Then taking into account the effect of urea & ammonium sulphate in a drain.
It's an incredible health & safety f*ck up, there may be powerful influences covering that up, there may be indifference to the lives of ordinary workers, there may be big companies that don't want that UNBELIEVABLY BIG compensation package?! But assasinations & stuff just muddys the water?

What stands out about this case is the lack of correspondences with other conspiratorial goings on, or so I thought until I started reading "Terror on the Tube:Behind the Veil of 7/7" by Nick Kollerstrom.
I got to the section which relates the unfolding of events that morning and the victims' and witnesses' initial reactions, and nearly jumped out of my skin.
The Undergound system was struck by a series of major electrical faiures, power surges and explosions of power cables, which reminded me of the strange electrical faults in the vicinity of the AZF plant.

To quote: "The cause of these events somewhat resembled a power surge event.Let's quote Bruce Lait, survivor of the Aldgate blast, speaking from his hospital bed:' We'd been on there a minute at most and then something happened. It was like a huge electricity surge which knocked us out and burst our eardrums. I can still hear that sound now.' Later a policeman said to him 'Mind that hole, that's where the bomb was.' and Lait recalled 'the metal was pushed upwards as if the bomb was underneath the train' That does sound like a bomb....however all sorts of electrical partsof the trains also appear as having blown out and frazzled."
(Kollerstrom p52)

"08.52 Reports of a Metropolitan Line explosion between Liverpool street and Aldgate; various reports of station power failures (p52)

At 09.24 British Transport Police blame it all on a power cut or power cable exploding.

At 09.40 they say power surges had occured at the 4 stations nearest to the blasts.

I was at home that morning, watching Channel 5's "The Wright Stuff". Around 09.25 (I think,) Matthew Wright interrupted the programme to read a bulletin saying there had been power surges at 3 tube stations. No mention of bombs or casualties.

7/7 has been blamed on 4 'suicide bombers', all of them with lifestyles and beliefs at odds with that conclusion. The AZF muslim workers were suspected of Islamic militancy, again with little if any supporting evidence.
According to the official narrative the body of Mohammed Siddique Khan was found at 3 different locations.

I must admit I haven't finished the book yet but I think this shifts the verdict on AZF away from cock-up and back to conspiracy

I didn't know that power surges were linked to the 7/7 events. It could be interesting. The inadequacy of lifestyles with supposed islamic militancy is another thread common to many terrorist attacks (911 springs to mind)

I suppose you meant ammonium nitrate. I had made a list of all chemical theories put forward in a post on 10.2.2009. All are dead ends. And there was no fire in the warehouse this day. Lasting for at least tens of minutes, it would be unmistakable. The main explosion itself was only one of the many events of the day, and can't explain them.

If you mean that Big business can buy help from authorities, this is true. Government may also come of its own will to the help of big business. And the reverse is equally true. They share many interests. They are tied at various levels ; a company seen as a national jewel may be helped for economical and strategic motives ; they often share secrets ; one may be in debt to the other ; they often use mutual help etc... This is especially true in the militaro-industrial world, or if a state is itself a shareholder ; that is often the case in France.

The dangers of this consanguinity are real. I'll give two probable examples in the aeronautical field, both involving Airbus.
One was the crash of Habsheim, on 26 June 1988, when an A320 crashed during a meeting, causing 3 casualties and about 100 wounded. Authorities declared the pilot was guilty the following day. The quickest investigation in the history of aeronautical accidents... The black boxes were suspected of having been replaced. But all evidence was ignored. Including an incriminating statement from a firefighter officer and photos. Examples of tactics similar to the AZF "investigation" abounded. Expertises contradicting official studies not taken into account, because they didn't come from state experts ; acceptance of any claim from one of those official experts, how wild it is ; ignorance of the scientific methodology ; requests for reconstitutions dismissed ; magistrates lacking of curiosity, and often of impartiality at all ; investigators from the aeronautical administration, linked to the potential suspects... 21 years later, the truth has still not been established. As for the press, it chose to remain silent. Strong suspicion that the government tried to protect the A320 and its advanced computer technology remains. http://www.crashdehabsheim.net/

Another example is of the crash of Mont Sainte-Odile, in the Vosges mountains (again in Alsace), of Flight Air Inter 148, another A320, on 20 January 1992 (89 deads, 9 survivors). There the inquiry, conducted notably by a magistrate involved in the Habsheim crash's, was excessively slow. But after 14 years, it could come to no convincing results. Some civil servants accused the government of sabotaging the inquiry. Two executives from Air Inter, two executives from the General Civil Aeronautical Direction (DGAC), an Airbus designer, a traffick controller were indicted. After a first trial in 2006, they were acquited, Airbus and Air France (inheritor of Air Inter) were held accountable. In a second trial in March 2008, Airbus was cleared of responsability, Air France held only for contractual motives. The indemnities of many families of victims were cancelled. Other questions remain unanswered, like the reasons why the rescuers came very late.
Theories vary from a malfunctionning in the design of A320 computer system, that the state tried to conceal ; to the suggestion that this fragile system was jammed by radio signals from a nearby NATO base, both a military cock-up and a flawed design from Airbus (André Dispeil).

In the AZF case, it transpires that Grande Paroisse and Total came to the support of the government. They helped to spirit away a number of inconvenient proofs, like the transfo and the black mark. They helped to tamper with the crime scene, notably to remove evidence of terrorist activity the first day. When some of their executives went to the SNPE on early October, they put a blind eye on damages independant from the main explosion. When they claimed they followed the electric lead, they did it only lazyly. They only pretended to do so, and put forward the most implausible scenarios. Suggesting they were in fact trying to use misdirection. There are many possible motives. Some of their executives were maybe involved. They may have been compensated secretely. Total needs support from the French government to gain new contracts in foreign countries. And as a whole, they're both members of the militaro-industrial complex. Total was at first a creation of the French state ; it bought Elf, and then inherited its files and dark practices. Its main shareholder is still a public entity. AZF is the former ONIA, the national ammonium nitrate company, another old government firm. Some of their lands formerly belonged to the military, and were later curiously returned to the Ministry of Defence, having became again restricted military ground. They share executives with firms like the SNPE.

Analis :- we've got muslims who weren't radical, strange electrical goings-on, more explosions than be accounted for , the impression that there was more than one team involved or that the operation was actually much bigger and more deaths than you might think necessary to create fear of Islamist terrorism.
AZF was a 9/11 that somehow didn't quite work. Flight 93 didn't go according to plan. more tube trains 'broke down', caught fire or maybe even suffered explosions than the official 4.
As ever with a good Fortean mystery none of the facts fit all the theoretical answers, and none of the answers fit all of the facts .
Perhaps we need to cast our nets a bit wider, think outside the box.

Sorry, you're quite right Analis I did mean nitrate (at least that was what I googled for info!). But I'll maintain the fact that ammonium nitrate can, under certain circumstances, burn & explode spontaneously.
My criticism of your theorising as being unfocused also remains. If you think that people who subscribe to FT forums would consider state-sponsored 'naughtiness...' a revelation, well... The French establishment sunk the, ever so cuddly, Rainbow Warrior.
By throwing so many unrelated stories in, you seem to be creating a fog of facts? Which may or may not be ironic?

Well, expert chemists , in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, said that anyone demonstrating the possibilty of self-ignition of AN should be awarded a Nobel Prize. We're still waiting, and will wait forever.

That's probably the case. Complex events are by definition impossible to reconstruct with a full accuracy. Including if we had the full facts. With 911, many things probably went wrong, and were sometimes dropped. The Pentagon, the threats on Air Force One, the fire at the White House, the assassination attempts on Bush... It is possible that the perpretators came with a number of contingency plans. I suppose they had more than one with Flight 93. With AZF, it is interesting to note that the perpetrators seemed to be behind the first official statements following the disaster. They were issued so quickly, it supports that their authors had an intimate knowledge of what happened. The surreal release stating that 'only one explosion was heard' was issued as early as 11.36 am. Someone else than the government, who could only be confused, seemed to be involved.
Later, the evolution of the cover-up obeyed to a scenario found in other cases. There is no shortage of them, all bearing a striking likeness.

A known occurence is of Air France Flight 1611 (often called Caravelle Ajaccio-Nice case), crashed on 11 September 1968 near the Riviera. Authorities blamed a fire of unexplained origin, but a missile was quickly suspected. Many seamen and Navy officers confirmed that it was common knowledge among the Army, not a vague rumour. The case was filled with usual manipulations, numerous matching testimonies of a missile ignored, revelation that exercices were conducted despite being long denied, military files altered, parts of the instruction files vanishing, attempt to refloat a reactor deliberately conducted a few miles from its true location... It didn't stir much controversy, compared to TWA 800 or Itavia Flight 870. http://www.nicerendezvous.com/car/20070 ... -2365.html

Another visible case of skulduggery is of the sinking of the Breton trawler Bugaled Breizh, lost on 15 January 2004 at 12.25. While a wide body of evidence points towards an unidentied submariner, the authorities try their best to put forward the most implausible theory. That the fishing line caught a flat, sandy seafloor, devoid of obstacles. The case had its lot of usual manipulations. Notably the strategy of putting the blame on victims (after that a first scapegoat, a Philippines-registered bulk carrier, had proved useless). The rescue center (CROSS) of the Cape Gris-Nez, on the Pas-de-Calais, in charge of the monitoring of the area from the border to Le Havre, had its radio transmissions recorder broken down from 12.51 to 6.57 pm. The Navy didn't give the readings of its sonars. As with AZF, a few papers published sceptical papers in the early stages of the investigation. But they now refrain to challenge the official version. While instructor judges Feltzer and Corre proved more resilient than usual, and stated that the involvment of a submariner was likely, the case is in danger of being closed, at the insistence of the prosecution and the government.

Authorities had already come with the same implausible tale of a line got burried on a sandbank. But they had burried themselves into even deeper ridicule. On 14th May 1987, a fishing trawler from Concarneau, La Jonque, sank in strange conditions. The burried line on a sandy seafloor does not hold water. Evidence points towards a collision with a submarine object. The conditions of the investigation and the ensuing cover-up are worth reporting.

Planes and helicopters with rescue teams were sent to the search of the boat and her crew. Their conversations with the CROSS of Etel were retransmitted publicly. On 17 May, the rescuers from two of these planes, including a Breguet, were distinctly heard speaking of a lifeboat (a dinghy) below them, carrying two survivors, seemingly exhausted. They had two hours to study and locate the boat and its passengers, the crew of the Breguet sent a dinghy a to them, one of them grabbed its rope. They knew what they were seeing. It may seem evident, but what followed is very interesting.
Two hours after they had reported the presence of survivors, following a 'mistake', the transmissions were 'accidentally' sent to a classified Navy channel. When the rescuers came back, it was explained that they had been victim of a collective hallucination, there never were any men aboard a lifeboat, only an empty life jacket ! In the following days, it was found that the tapes of the conversations between the Breguet and the rescue center had been 'accidentally' erased.
Tampering didn't halt there. A pocket submarine, La Licorne, had been sent to film the flooded wreck. The cassette was sealed, acoording to the procedure. But when investigators watched it, they had a surprise. The recordings were replaced by an action movie. A maritime gendarme had taken with him the video tape, and recorded a movie at his home ! Extremely inattentive, he hadn't noticed that the video was in a scealed and numbered bag, like every exhibit... It seems he was never punished.
That so dull cover-ups work at all may seem hard to swallow. But it was bought, except by the relatives of victims, who were not discouraged. At their insistence, a judge ordered to refloat the wreck. This was done in August 1991. What was on the lost videotape was this time clearly visible : a huge scraping mark along the flanks of the ship, with the paint removed. Analyzes were soon ordered. But on 2 September, journalist Bernadette Dubourg wrote in Sud-Ouest that no paint from a submariner had been found. At the time, expert Jean-Marie Grafeille (a friend of Dubourg) was still taking samples from the wreck and was at 800 km from his laboratory. In short, the results of the tests were known before they had been conducted... It should have led to the replacement of expert Grafeille. But he was allowed to issue the final reports, filled with unchecked analyses of samples ; expert Loïc Le Ribault pointed inconsistencies. Requests for counter-expertises were ignored. Leading unsurprisingly to the closing of the case. As for the fate of the two people spotted on the lifeboat, it remains unknown (although the instructor judge admitted they existed).

But the most striking example is of the Maison des Têtes

On 15 February 1989, at 14.26 pm, in Toulon (home to an important military harbour), an old building called Maison des Têtes exploded, leaving 13 casualties.
An explanation was put forward only two days later. It was a gas explosion. On 22 February, police announced that a retired military sergeant, Annette Wazerstein, living in a flat on 4th floor, was depressive. On 25, they said she had commited suicide by opening the valve of her gas conducts. Supposedly, a gas meter belonging to her had been found in the remains, showing an unusual consumption of gas. This explanation was parroted by the media ; the judiciary investigation refused to envision any other possibility. But a serious look at the evidence tells a very different story : the culprit was a missile.

Anomalies were noted immediatley after the disaster. No-one noted a smell of gas, on the contrary what was reported was a smell of powder. A number of witnesses related the presence of strange police officers. They were never identified.
The rubble was illegally removed from the scene by the military as early as the afternoon. It was dispatched on several acres of a military rubbish tip, its locations left unmarked.
This was not the only example of tampering with the scene. When relatives of victims from the second floor came to the morgue to retrieve their belongings, they found that their bodies were naked ! Their clothes had all been 'inadvertently' removed and destroyed, in violation of all procedures.

Expert Mrs Quicke, working for the lazy judiciary investigation (it began only one month after the event), admitted that she was not allowed to take any in situ samples, being only given three ones by the police, with no marking of their origin. There were no other samplings (which asks this question : on what data relied the incredibly fast police investigation, in the days following the disaster ? ), no new autopsies. An unexplained white compound found on the hand of victim Jean-François Taurisano was never analyzed.
The goal of those manipulations was clear : to conceal the presence of explosives. Despite this, it could be put in evidence.
Families of victims had kept a number of remains. Notably a lock of hair from Alexandra Baille and a ring from Jean-François Taurisano, both dead on the 2nd floor. In 1991, as the instructor judge, Mrs Cutajar, had rejected their request to conduct a counter-expertise, they asked a renowned forensic expert, Loïc Le Ribault, to analyze those remains. He found a massive presence of residual explosives. Tests on the building remained possible. In February 1995, new ones on rubble taken in-situ proved positive to explosives.
A crucial witness was Wulfram Dherment. He worked as an apprentice in a dentistry laboratory on the second floor. In a near room, he suddenly heard employee Alexandra Baille shouting, while she was looking through a window. Instinctively, he jumped towards the exit. He felt an explosion near him. He was miraculously saved by a beam. The closeness of the explosion had deafened him. But he was surprized to read that the police reported he had heard the explosion, implying that he was far from it. He told to some local papers that this was false. He was summoned by an instructor judge ; one year after the events ! She threatened him that if he didn't comply to the official version, he would put himself into trouble. He understood that his tale worried some people. He lived in Toulon, where assassinations were common ; he chose to remain silent for a few years.
He had black spots on a calf, affected by a complete desquamation. Analysis showed the presence of powder and titanium, not present in the building but used for missiles.

The instructor judge ordered a report from three experts "to end the rumours". Released only on 13 May 1994, it couldn't answer any of the counter-analyzes, but focused on tyhe state of the bodies to locate the source of the explosion. The report stated that it took place at the 4th floor, adding that it was evidenced by the fact that no-one from a lower level had been lifted. In fact, this was exactely the contrary : three witnesses from the 3rd floors related how they had been lifted, one of them had been hurled through a window after feeling the ground lifting up ; evidence that the explosion happened at a lower level. None supported the official scenario.
The state of Mrs Wazerstein's body was not compatible with her supposed closeness to the explosion. She displayed fractures, but no signs of being torn to bits. To the contrary of the body of Jean-François Taurisano, on the second floor. Whole parts were missing, clear indication that the explosion took place near him. All of this had been evidenced in 1992 by forensic expert Roger Le Breton, but as usual, was not taken into account.

Investigations at the bequest of the relatives dismissed the claims that A. Wazerstein had suicidal tendencies. The gas company, Gaz de France, firmly denied that any unusual consumption of gas had taken place. Their own report concluded explosives were involved.

Were there people to sight a missile or rocket ? There certainly were. Alexandra Baille was frightened by something coming towards her. This same thing was heard, and sometimes seen, by a number of passerbys, whose statements were deliberately ignored. Most depicted the sound as a whistling ; some felt an associated displacement of air ; a visual witness described like a very fast moving lightning, headed towards the Maison des Têtes. A dentist saw a bright glow, associated with a kind of sizzling or crackling. He jumped to the ground, only after he heard the explosion. As for the likely provenance of the projectile, the Bay of Toulon was filled with a float of French and US warships coming back from an exercice. In the twisted logic of bogus justice, all this evidence led naturally to the closing of the case.

The official version : a gas explosion. The truth : the building was hurt by a missile or rocket. Very probably of military origin. Criminal attacks were common at Toulon, gangsters sometimes have heavy material. But the speed with which the military reacted points towards their involvment. They knew almost instantly what was going on. The modus operandi shared many similitudes with AZF, and many other cases. An immediate intervention, tampering with the crime scene, bogus explanation coming soon without inquiry. Soon blindly repeated by the police, justice and media. When new studies put in evidence grave malpractices, they are simply ignored. The case was closed, and faded into oblivion. All this suggests the existence of a classified guide titled "how to handle a cover-up" (with possibly an international version).
