Like the electrocutions and other electromagnetic effects, these phenomena may seem baffling and difficult ot believe. But they were sighted by numerous and independant witnesses. No reductionnist explanation exists. They had nothing to do with the flash of an explosion or a reflection on smokes (and certainly not with a "photo-flash" caused by the "vaporisation" - wow ! - of the aluminium roof, like official experts tried to support ; this inquiry looks more and more like a pseudo-science contest to them). Many statements included such depictions, notably from SNPE workers. But were not properly studied. The police and official experts often tried to dissuade witnesses to report their sightings. But a significant number of them were investigated precisely on many occasions. Some testified to the court ; far from deluded, their statements remained consistent and convincing. Despite the hostility from the judge, who had in advance stated that testimonies were worthless ! It should be teached in all law and police schools... The court thought appropriate to question them on 1 April...
Some saw only a flash, or flashes in succession. But others saw distinct lightnings or rays (sometimes alongside a flash, separated by a few seconds), at least hundreds of meters longs. Strikings from the transformers couldn't explain them (although they could relate to some other light manifestations). There seem to have been a number of them, in different shapes and directions. Alain Hodin, who studied 35 precise testimonies, classified these sightings into 3 categories : similar to a usual thunderstorm lighthning, like a huge electric arc, blinding ; very fast, but they can be seen moving ;
straight, like a laser ; sometimes instantaneous, no direction visible ; but sometimes movement can be seen ; bright or blinding ;
curved, diaphaneous, and slow, more like a moving light.
Examples :
*
Patrick D. (already mentioned) was driving to the west along the Route d'Empalot (north of the Pole) in a Ford Mondeo with his father. He heard and felt a very strong explosion, saw a very violent lightning, like from a thunderstorm but maybe larger, at least hundred of meters long, white/blue, moderately oblique, with a south-east/north-west direction ; he thought it erupted from the prilling tower. It was so bright that it lit up AZF, despite that the weather was sunny ; he could see the whole scene through trees, like a chinese theater ! He heard a hissing, like a piece of red heated metal plunging into water This first group of events led him to park his car (which took, at 75 km/h -47 mph - , appr. 8-9 seconds). Then, he and his father saw the upper part of the green tower lifting up, and explode. 1 second later, they felt the tremendous blast from B221.
The police chose at first to ignore him. Later, after a private investigator who had been heard by the PJ mentioned his statement to them, Pr Arnaudiès, they were forced to hear him, but tried to convince him that he had witnessed nothing unusual (they even dared to dish out the silly seismic explanation, it was not difficult for him, a highly qualified physicist, to put them in their place). A mysterious caller, claiming he was the "director of the SNPE", phoned him later to try to convince him there had been no lightning, to no avail. He stood to his testimony before the court, despite being interrogated quite harshly. D2043

Similar sightings : Nelly C. (already mentioned), saw a blinding lightning erupting from the green tower, at least tens of meters long, after hearing an explosion and feeling a violent tremor (D2804, D2930). Patrick D., a SNPE worker, heard two explosions, the first seemingly from inside the SNPE, the second maybe from the Lilas transfo. ; at the same than the second sound, he saw a huge lightning ascending from the prilling tower, a few seconds before the B221 shockwave ( http://www.azf-10h18.com/PGR_SNPE-IX.html (go to #3) ) (D2089 : http://www.azf-10h18.com/SNPE/Temoin%20 ... seille.gif ).

J.-P. B. was in his office, 1500 m (4930 ft) south of the crater, when he saw a lightning, like a gigantic electrical arc, slighly oblique, at least 300 m long, white-fire and blinding. Its base was hidden by a building, but the azimuth pointed towards the north of the SNPE. Its height, at its proximal end, was estimated at 140 m (460 ft). He saw a few seconds later, a black column, from the azimuth of the crater. Followed immediately by a powerful blast.
The policeman who took his deposition refused to write that the lightning took place before the B221 detonation. He kept repeating to J.-M. B. that he had been shocked, and couldn't remember what happened. Mr B. had to issue a second statement.

Laurent S., a driver, may have seen the same phenomenon : he witnessed a lightning, seemingly falling on the plant (statement issued on 1 october ; PV 2001/539/D42).
*
Mr A. was at a market, at La Faourette, 3 km to the north-west of the crater. At 9.30 am, despite that the weather was sunny, he was surprised to see brown mists in the direction of the Chemical Pole. Around 10:15, he felt suddenly the ground shaking. 3 to 4 seconds later, he saw a lightning, descending from the sky, in the direction of the Toulouse Stadium, (north of the Pole), where stands an old hydraulic plant. Then, a few seconds later, he heard a moderately strong explosion. 6 to 7 seconds later, a much stronger explosion.

Gabrielle F. was driving to the north on the Route d'Espagne (opposite to Patrick L., already cited). She had bypassed Door B, and stopped at a traffick lights, in front of the north-west angle of the plant. When she sighted a blinding yellow-red lightning/beam in front of her car, very low and perfectly straight, coming from the SEMVAT (public transport company) (she thought she saw it moving, it was not instantaneous) and directed towards the AZF guardroom at Door A. She then heard an explosion from her right, like a plane hitting the sound barrier, she thought it was a consequence of the beam. The lights turning green, she drove fifty meters before she was hurt by the B221 shockwave, and, badly hurt, she had to park her car. An unknown man then drove her to the Purpan Hospital, where she stayed for 4 days.
During her stay at the hospital, she was visited by four different psychologists, who had a very strange behaviour. They kept telling her "kindly" that no, she had not seen the lightning, no, she hadn't heard the first explosion. The director of the hospital later denied that he had ordered any psychologist to take care of her. But on 30 November 2001, German journalist Rosemarie Gratz confirmed in an article published by Freitag that victims of the disaster who had been witnesses to unusual events, were quasi-brainwashed by psychiatrists or psychologists employed by the City of Toulouse, who tried to convince them that they were victims of autosuggestion. Tirat and Hériot confirm that Toulouse mayor, Philippe DOUSTE-BLAZY, had asked all psychologists and psychiatrists of Toulouse to come to a meeting in the city hall, in the hours following the disaster. As a whole, Douste-Blazy's behaviour was very ambiguous (and opportunist) in the following years. Angering the government by sometimes recalling he had heard two explosions. Stopping only when he was promoted Foreign Minister (a very bad one indeed).
Her troubles did not end there. She was shocked the police did not contact her. Especially as they had retrieved her car, and still had it in their custody. A few days later, she went to recover her car, but they heard her only distantely, and did not call her again, despite her insistence. She had later a bad surprise : she found that in their 2002 preliminary report, the SRPJ had written she had driven only fifteen meters. With the obvious intent to claim that the first explosion and the lightning all came from the 221 explosion. Despite that their in situ report specified her car was indeed where she remembered. She had to ask Judge Perriquet to rectify.
She reiterated her statement to the court, despite that the judge tried to destabilize her.
Note : like in Patrick D.'s sighting, the lightning/beam was in a line with the unexplained dark scrach.
