Strange Crimes

A bit more info has cropped up, now that London journos have donned their wellies and come down to deeps of the SW.

Interesting quotes from locals in an article here, from https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...d-birds-of-prey-dumped-outside-hampshire-shop:

"...But why leave the carcasses outside the shop in Broughton, a village of about 1,000 inhabitants renowned locally for the dovecote in the churchyard said to have been gifted by Richard III?

“That’s the puzzle,” said Mike Hensman, treasurer of the shop. “We think it may just be location.” The village is roughly equidistant between the cities of Winchester, Salisbury and Southampton. It is surrounded by open farmland and chalky downland, good hare territory....
“I don’t think it was a planned, targeted attack,” said Hensman. “Just one of those things that happens in the countryside. We’re a resilient lot. People were shocked but not scared and we’ve rallied round.”...

....“I don’t think it was a planned, targeted attack,” said Hensman. “Just one of those things that happens in the countryside. We’re a resilient lot. People were shocked but not scared and we’ve rallied round.”

It is not the first time there has been such an incident. Last month, about 25 dead hares, rabbits, pheasants and a decapitated deer were left outside a village primary school in Awbridge, 7 miles from Broughton. Villagers say there were two similar incidents at two other schools that have not made headlines. In January a deer was discovered strung up in a tree in the nearby town of Totton.

One Broughton resident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, said there was undoubtedly a pattern and that the Awbridge incident happened after a farmer confronted hare coursers using his land.

They said that a few days before the bodies were left at the Broughton shop, an attempted burglary in the village was thwarted. “What happens is, the gangs try to intimidate people. The animals are a message: ‘We can do what we want and you can’t catch us.’ There can be a ‘them and us’ situation too. This is a wealthy village. That can make us unpopular.”....

.....In September last year five men were sentenced after an investigation by the specialist country watch team into a group of men who drove on to farmland near Winchester, damaging crops, before hare coursing in a field. Police found the men with lurcher dogs, dead hares and two dead rabbits. Sentences included community orders, fines and bans on driving and owning dogs.

But it is a big patch to police and in January National Farmers Union members met officers in Hampshire to discuss an increase in hare coursing. One Hampshire estate has reported more than a dozen cases to the police since November.

After the incident at Broughton on Friday, Hampshire police found a burnt-out Suzuki Grand Vitara car they believe was connected. They are also examining the shop’s CCTV footage....."
So that’s 4 incidents we know about so far - 3 at schools & 1 shop. The plot thickens..

Woman who poisoned boy with 'industrial amounts' of laxatives faces jail

Tracy Menhinick was found unanimously guilty of wilfully harming the child, aged between three and six at the time, leading to his growth being stunted.

The trial in Aberdeen, which lasted 19 days, heard 5,500 pages of evidence and medical records relating to the youngster and his failure to gain weight.

Menhinick, 52, will appear at Glasgow High Court on Tuesday, March 19, for sentencing.

Last month, a jury found she had given the boy “industrial amounts” of lactulose which resulted in his growth being stunted and led to his hospitalisation.

As a result of this, the boy underwent needless operations which left him with permanent disfigurements, impairments and endangered his life.

One expert witness said the child had resembled a survivor from a concentration camp when admitted to hospital weighing just under 10kg at the age of five.

Whether or not hare coursing etc goes on, I doubt it has anything to do with these animal dumpings. Coursing may still go on in places but it’s still illegal & suspect those involved are likely to keep it a bit under wraps rather than dump the results outside firstly a school, then a village shop.

A small group with a grudge about something or other is my guess - maybe even just one man..
Quite a few lambs and sheep have been found shot up this way lately.

We got our lurcher at 12 weeks old - barely weaned - from a bloke on Gumtree. He was 'getting rid' of him because - in his words - "fucking useless for hare coursing!"
We immediately changed his name, dropped all contact with the scrote, and had Jago micro-chipped, which he wasn't.

I wish good feelings to Muslims as well but there's nothing good about going without food, especially if it's enforced by a goon squad.
I have to remind everyone in senior site management about risk assessing fasting Muslims for high risk activities during Ramadan.
If someone is not eating and drinking I don’t want to see them anywhere near a safety critical task.

Man, 37, arrested after pile of dead animals dumped outside shop

A 37-year-old man from Totton, near Southampton, has been arrested on suspicion of seven offences, and remains in custody.

They include various animal welfare and poaching offences, as well as a firearms-related offence.
Police said examinations of the barn owl and kestrel – both of which are legally protected – revealed the birds had been shot with a gun.

It's quite scary as Broughton is a neighbouring village to my parents' village. I know the area well and it's got a good community spirit despite the influx of wealthy residents.
The animal dumping thing made no sense to me, absolutely appalling and bound to draw major attention to whatever illegal activity you are pursuing.
The lack of a rural police presence means there's a lot of crime that just doesn't get much coverage or even reported by the victim.

No yolk, I'm shell shocked.

A woman has been charged with two counts of theft and driving offences after 48 boxes of eggs were stolen.

The incident happened in a Marks & Spencer store at Gateway Retail Park in Banbury, Oxfordshire, on 27 March.

Thames Valley Police said the store manager reported the theft and that a suspect had escaped in a vehicle.

"Not your average poaching in Banbury," the force wrote in a post on X, showing a picture of the recovered eggs.

TVP said all goods had been "returned to their rightful owners".

Pennsylvania State Police said that the Lehighton Borough Police Department was called to a home in Carbon County on Monday for a reported assault in progress.

When officers arrived, they found a 59-year-old man suffering from "life-threatening injuries" from being struck by a "piercing object," according to the news release. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

[It was] reported that the victim was identified as 59-year-old Edward Whitehead Jr. The outlet went on to report that 30-year-old Zak Russel Moyer was taken into custody and admitted to going to his neighbor's house "for the purpose of scaring him."

Moyer told police that he stabbed his neighbor in the head with the knife, the outlet reported, citing the court records, which added that the victim was "struck with a chainsaw." Moyer reportedly told his sister about a week ago that he "wanted to kill Ed the neighbor."

Moyer faces a homicide charge and was taken to the Carbon County Prison.

So far it's a One Body Problem.

BEIJING (AP) — Police in Shanghai say they have detained a suspect in the death by possible poisoning of the billionaire founder of a Chinese video game company that makes films based on the popular science fiction novel “The Three-Body Problem.”

Lin Qi, 39, died on Christmas Day after being hospitalized, according to his company, Yoozoo Games Co., also known as Youzu Interactive.
A police statement said a 39-year-old coworker, identified only by the surname Xu, was detained. The statement said the victim was hospitalized Dec. 17 and diagnosed with possible poisoning but gave no other details.

An employee who answered the phone Monday at the Shanghai police press office said there was no additional information to release.
The business magazine Caixin, citing unidentified industry sources, said the suspect is an employee of Yoozoo’s film division and was working on “The Three-Body Problem.” ...

Now it will become a two body problem.

The release of Netflix's series 3 Body Problem has been watched millions of times around the globe since its release late last month.

It has even found an audience in China where Netflix is unavailable, sparking much chatter among viewers of the series.

But many fans of the three-book series, credited with propelling China's nascent science fiction genre after its publication in 2008, have also been paying attention to a court room in Shanghai where one of the key players behind the adaptation was sentenced to death just a day after the show's release.

His crime? Murdering a man sometimes dubbed China's "billionaire millennial" - the gaming tycoon Lin Qi, whose company Yoozoo Games owns the rights for film adaptations of the Chinese science fiction epic.

According to the court, Xu Yao, who was known as a distinguished lawyer, became consumed by professional rivalry after Lin sidelined him shortly after he helped land the Netflix deal in 2020.

Within months of this apparent slight, Lin was dead - the victim of a poisoning plot described as both "premeditated" and "extremely despicable" by the court last week.

For fans of The Three-Body Problem, which features an alien civilisation and is set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, the parallels were clear....

It's a hypocritical religion but then most are. There was a time when the Lenten fast was enforced. Fortunately it's a thing of the past.

I can't understand why people wish Muslims a Happy Ramadan, it's outdated and oppressive.

And it's hardly "fasting" when they eat an early breakfast and a whopping great late dinner.
All they do is skip lunch (which many people do, whether Muslim or not).

Not drinking liquids during the day is hardly a good idea, especially when it is enforced by goon squads.

What makes it strange is the location - an ancient Hill Fort.

A man has appeared in court after allegedly driving his car at and hitting a woman after a romantic meeting at one of Ireland's most historic landmarks turned sour.

The man, who is aged in his 30s, appeared before Judge Ciaran Liddy at a specially convened sitting of Letterkenny District Court in County Donegal.

He is charged with a range of offences which allegedly took place on Sunday evening last, March 31st, at An Grianan of Aileach fort at Carrowreagh, Burnfoot.

The five charges include Section 3 assault causing harm to the woman, dangerous driving, refusing to give a sample, engaging in threatening and abusive or insulting behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace and also breaching a Protection Order.

The accused, with an address on the Inishowen Peninsula, cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

Hippies fight back against the drug dealers! I think something similar happened in London during late 60s or early 70s..

For more than 50 years, the hippy neighbourhood of Christiania has been a haven of counter-culture, in the very heart of the Danish capital Copenhagen.

Popular with tourists, it is known for its liberal attitude towards cannabis and the infamous drug market, Pusher Street.

However, in recent years organised criminals have increasingly taken over, and growing violence has rattled the community.

Residents have now had enough. In a bid to reclaim the street from drug dealers, this Saturday they began physically digging it up, armed with spades and crowbars.

There were celebratory claps and cheers of "Christiania", as locals prised up heavy cobblestones and tossed them into wheelbarrows, one by one. ...

How will digging up the street stop the dealers?

I reckon it's a barrier, prevents pushers making quick getaways or arrivals. But it also likely has symbolic value, more than just drawing a line in the sand.
The place already looks like a toilet. I do hope they can get around to smartening it up after the gangs have gone.
