Strange Crimes

Ms Cook and Westlake started arguing, and Ms Pollard joined them when she became concerned. She saw Westlake shove Ms Cook in the chest, causing her to stumble backwards, before he punched Ms Pollard to the right side of her face, the court heard.

He ran into the road and started kicking and punching Ms Cook's car, smashing a window before climbing on the bonnet and roof and jumping up and down

The vehicle had to be written off as a result.

When Westlake got down he ran towards Ms Pollard and punched her again.

The court then heard how he started shouting and stripped down to his boxer shorts before coming out of the house with a tub of baby oil and covering his body with it.

Norfolk A47 road deaths: A 'puzzle' despite new searches

More items have been found on the A47 by police investigating the death of a Lithuanian couple, but officers say they are still "puzzled" by it.
Tadas Zaleskas, 26, and Nonita Karajevaite, 24, were both killed on the A47 near Terrington St John, Norfolk, on Sunday.
Ms Karajevaite's death is being treated as suspicious following allegations she was forcibly pushed into the traffic.

Norfolk Police said a search of the road on Thursday recovered more items.
Det Ch Insp Paul Durham said: "A search took place on Thursday afternoon and evening. Some items were recovered. We are currently assessing them in relation to their relevance to the investigation."
He said all the personal items found so far just "feeds the puzzle".
"It is not clear at this stage what has happened," he said.

He appealed to members of the Lithuanian community who knew the couple to get in contact with police.
"Any information might help to solve this mystery. It is all the more shocking as they were clearly an intelligent and vibrant couple," said Det Ch Insp Durham.

Japan cab driver held for drugging women with diuretics
AFP NewsAFP News – Thu, May 8, 2014

A Japanese taxi driver who got a sexual thrill out of watching women desperate to urinate has been arrested for allegedly feeding passengers snacks laced with diuretics, police said Thursday.

Toshihiko Nishi, 41, lured women into long rides in his cab, in at least one case by offering a half-price fare, and then plied them with crackers covered in a substance that would make them want to go to the toilet.

Police who raided the man's home told AFP they found videos that Nishi said were from a security camera inside the cab and showed around 50 women wetting themselves on his back seat.

One alleged victim told police she had got into Nishi's taxi in Osaka, western Japan, in October last year, and been given a small paper cup containing water biscuits.

A short time after eating the snack, she began to need the toilet. But when she told the driver to let her out of the car so she could relieve herself, he refused and instead passed back an absorbent sheet on which he encouraged her to urinate.

"I got excited by watching women trying to withstand the urge to urinate," the driver told investigators, adding he had "bought diuretics through the Internet, and crushed them to mix with crackers."

Nishi has been arrested on suspicion of committing a violent act, a police officer said.

Man dressed as Spider-Man arrested in Times Square after attacking police officer

Junior Bishop’s spidey-sense gets him charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief

A man has been arrested after punching a police officer in the face in Times Square while dressed as Spider-Man.

The impersonator was dressed head to toe in the Spider-Man outfit while allegedly telling New York tourists he only accepted $5, $10 and $20 dollar bills for people to have their picture taken with them.

But as Peter Parker was told by his uncle; “With great power comes great responsibility,” which a police officer clearly wanted to point out to the chancer after he overheard the amount the fake Spider-Man was charging tourists.

Junior Bishop, 25, was let down by his Spidey-sense when he swore at the police officer who told tourists he was obliged to accept donations of any amount they chose, and continued to swear as the New York cop asked for his identification, which Mr Bishop said he didn’t have.

Mr Bishop then revealed his true identity as he tore off his mask and threw repeated punches at the police officer who had tried to arrest him and who was then backed up by a second officer, as they took the not-so-friendly-neighbourhood Spider-Man down.

The fracas was caught on video while other street performers dressed as Mickey Mouse, Elmo and Batman stood by and watched.

Mr Bishop has been charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. The officer was taken to a medical centre to be treated for pain and swelling to the face. ...

The woman was arrested by police at the North Terminal on Wednesday night
She was taken to Crawley police station where she was questioned by officers on suspicion of threatening behaviour.

In a statement, Sussex Police said: "At 10.22pm on Wednesday a 48-year-old unemployed woman from Edinburgh was arrested at the North Terminal, Gatwick Airport, on suspicion of using threatening behaviour while aboard Thompson flight 297 from Tunisia to Edinburgh.

"The flight was diverted into Gatwick after it was alleged the woman had been abusive and had thrown a prosthetic leg and food at cabin crew."
A spokesman added: "She was swearing blue murder, saying she was going to do this and that and the other, so the flight was diverted to Gatwick."

In a statement, Thomson Airways said: "Thomson Airways would like to apologise to passengers for the diversion into Gatwick airport of flight TOM 297 travelling from Enfidha, Tunisia, to Edinburgh on 30 July.
"Unfortunately a passenger became disruptive on board and as a last resort the captain decided to divert the flight to Gatwick.
"Upon landing, the aircraft was met by local police and the passenger was removed for questioning.
"We would like to reassure customers that their safety is our priority at all times.
"Thomson Airways operates a zero-tolerance policy with regards to any disruptive behaviour on board, and incidents of this type are extremely rare."

Grave robber: woman filmed stealing 51 roses left by widower one day after funeral
Grieving Maurice Powell, 75, had laid a rose for every year of marriage to sweetheart Sandra, 70, following her cremation at Robin Hood Cemetery near Solihull
By Keith Perry
5:20PM BST 31 Jul 2014

Police are hunting a thief who was captured on CCTV stealing 51 roses from a cemetery just 24 hours after a pensioner laid his wife to rest.
The thief was filmed on the cemetery’s CCTV stealing the roses left by a widower to his beloved late wife, to commemorate their life together.
Grieving Maurice Powell, 75, had laid a rose for every year of marriage to sweetheart Sandra, 70, following her cremation at Robin Hood Cemetery at Shirley, near Solihull, on July 18.

But when the pensioner returned the following day he was devastated to learn the flowers had been stolen – with the brazen theft caught on camera.
In the footage, the well-dressed middle-aged woman is walking around a memorial square at the Solihull crematorium looking at the flowers on display.

She eventually stoops down and snatches the roses, before walking off with them.
The theft took place at 3.30pm on July 19. The dark-haired woman was wearing a white top and trousers.
West Midlands Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the woman, who was wearing a scarf, to come forward. A spokesman said: “The theft of 51 red roses from a grave at a Solihull cemetery was reported to police on 19 July. The report is being progressed and enquiries continue.”

Mr Powell, from Hall Green, West Midlands, was shocked by the theft. He said: “I can’t understand why anyone would do this. How low can some people get? It doesn’t say much about society.”
The dad-of-two said his wife has been “very bubbly, a lovely woman.”
“She put up a lot with me. I was the lucky one, I always told her I used all my luck up the day I met her,” added the retired Navy man.

After the theft, the only thing left behind was Maurice’s poignant memorial card which read: “One for every year since you became my bride, now I close my eyes and dream of times when we walked side by side.

Mr Powell plans to scatter his wife’s ashes on August 7 - her birthday.

Robin Hood Cemetery has denounced the theft and pledged to work with police to track down the culprit.
A spokesperson said: “It is difficult to understand why anyone would want to steal from the cemetery and show such complete disregard for someone mourning the loss of a loved one. We do have CCTV at the cemetery and will support police to investigate the incident.”

If the CCTV turns out to be as good as the pic on the link above, he is home free.

Police are hunting a 6ft shoplifter who snatched some meat before making his getaway – on a girl’s pink bike.

The Leeds outer west neighbourhood policing team are investigating following the incident at the Co-op on Swinnow Road in Bramley on Thursday morning.

Detailing recent “crimes of note”, the team’s Facebook page said: “Theft of meat yesterday morning by an adult male suspect who fled on, of all things, a SMALL PINK and WHITE GIRL’S BIKE.... no we are not kidding.”

The thief cycled off towards the Wellstones area. He was in his mid-30s with short, cropped brown hair and was wearing a grey Adidas top, black trousers and black trainers.

Police said they have obtained CCTV footage but want to hear from anyone with information on 101.

Woman Keeps Getting Arrested For Trying to Sneak Onto Flights

Marilyn Hartman, described by authorities as a "serial stowaway," was arrested by police at Los Angeles International Airport for the second time this week after allegedly trying to sneak onto a flight. Hartman has been arrested by police seven times this year for making similar attempts at SFO.

Hartman, 62, had been arrested by police Wednesday at LAX for trying to hop a free flight, and was given a court order to stay away from airport. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Hartman was released from jail Wednesday after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

"It was stupid, and it is something that I don't want to repeat," Hartman told the Press Democrat as she left court yesterday. She also the paper that she is homeless, and feels safer in airports than she does on the streets.

This past Monday, Hartman successfully—after three attempts—bypassed security at San Jose International Airport and boarded a Los Angeles-bound Southwest Airlines flight by pretending to be with a family, the Associated Press reports.

"I've been in some pretty awful situations so I took desperate measures," she told reporters Wednesday.

I love the idea of an axe-wielding Irish physicist.

Would make a great character for a crime series on TV on the lines of Dexter with a bit of Spike Milligan thrown in. He's even got the right sort of name.

New questions on why different evidence in Irish nanny, Aisling Brady McCarthy, trial not followed up. Photo by: AP
Peter Gelzinis, a top columnist writing for the Boston Herald, has compared the case of Irish nanny Aisling Brady McCarthy to a scene from a Kafka novel.

And he has questioned why new evidence that the baby, Rehma Sabi, was injured weeks before her death when the nanny was not around has not led to a separate criminal investigation.

This woman is still in prison when the medical evidence shows that the child had old injuries'

Lawyers for Irish nanny held in US launch scathing defence

Aisling Brady McCarthy’s lawyers have a filed a scathing objection to testimony implicating the Cavan nanny in the death of a baby girl in Boston at the beginning of 2013.

Rehma Sabir was diagnosed as having being the victim of abusive head trauma when she was brought to Boston Children’s Hospital, having been in the care of Ms McCarthy, who has been held in custody in Boston since the incident occurred in January 2013.

Her legal team claimed in a motion filed late Wednesday that Alice Newton, the specialist who carried out the tests, spent no time looking at alternative diagnoses and that the medical director of the child protection programme at Boston Children’s Hospital diagnosed Shaken Baby Syndrome “too quickly”.

They also claimed that “an avalanche of science” had exposed shaken-baby diagnoses as unreliable. ...

According to medical records, Rehma was diagnosed with malnutrition five weeks before her death and “by all accounts bruised very easily”, they wrote.

“When she died, her body had no bruises, grip marks, crush injuries, or acute broken bones,” they added. “Yet the Commonwealth [of Massachusetts] alleges that medical science proves that she died because the last person with the child, Ms McCarthy, violently shook her or caused her abusive head trauma. Not so.”

The District Attorney prosecuting the case has already conceded that vertebral fractures discovered in an autopsy were mostly likely three to four weeks old at a time when they were visiting family in Pakistan.

The trial is scheduled for October.

Fuel stolen from pipeline under Deputy PM's Kent residence

Thieves have siphoned millions of pounds of fuel from a pipeline which runs under Deputy PM Nick Clegg's official country residence in Kent.
Esso's South East pipeline runs from Fawley Refinery, in Hampshire, to Purfleet Fuel Terminal, in Essex.
The company said it discovered a section at Chevening, near Sevenoaks, had been tampered with.

The Sun reported 30,000 litres of fuel a day were stolen over seven months, with a value of £8.3m at the pumps.
Kent Police said thieves had used "highly specialist techniques" to siphon the fuel.

Chevening House Estate is shared by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond.

An Esso spokesman said: "We recently strengthened our pipeline security and monitoring procedures, and on Wednesday detected criminal damage at Chevening on the South East pipeline.
"The section of pipeline was temporarily shut down to make repairs, which have now been completed.
"We strongly condemn the highly dangerous criminal action by those involved and are working closely with the police in their criminal investigations."

A Kent Police spokesman added: "Initial indications are that this was a well-organised crime, employing highly specialist techniques to siphon fuel from pipelines which operate at very high pressure."

Revenue officials seize 44 giant clams at airport

Over 40 of an endangered species of giant clam were seized by the Revenue Commissioners at Dublin Airport last year, according to new figures.

The clams had been illegally harvested from the coral reefs off the coast of Vietnam, and were being smuggled into Ireland as part of a tropical fish consignment for sale on the black market.

The 44 oceanic giants are the largest living bivalve molluscs and one of the most endangered species of clam.

They can grow to 1.2m in diameter and weigh up to 200kg. The species is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

The clams are considered a delicacy in some areas of Japan and south-east Asia.

The data, released under the Freedom of Information Act, revealed that the consignment of giant clams was the first seizure of live exotic animals by Revenue and Customs for over four years.

The last seizure occurred in 2009, when six live turtles were discovered at Shannon Airport, having been imported from China.

Chinese schoolchildren 'forced to give blood'

Police in China have arrested seven people thought to be behind a scheme that forced schoolchildren to give blood, state media says.

According to police, at least eight children aged between 10 and 16 were made to donate blood to a company in Gansu province in north-west China.

Severed horse’s head thrown through window of Dublin house in love row

A report in the Irish Independent says the man is in jail for threatening the woman after he claimed she had sold another horse without his permission.

The severed horse’s head was thrown through the window of a house in the west Dublin suburb of Mulhuddart.

Police believe the woman’s former boyfriend organized the stunt after he learned the woman is now pregnant with another man's child.

The report says associates of the jailed criminal killed the horse with a shotgun blast before cutting its head off with a saw.

The severed horse’s head was then thrown through a window of the Mulhuddart property.

The remainder of the horse carcass was found in a nearby park.

The report says the jealous prisoner grew angry when he found out about his former girlfriend’s new relationship.

A police spokesman said: “Our investigations into this case are ongoing and we would appeal for any witnesses to the incident, or who might have any knowledge about this horse to come forward to us.”
