If I had a real genuine talent (if it does exist) I would not put myself up for examination by a group who labels themselves Skeptics.

It sounds rather like being ambushed in a James Randhi style to me.

No, I'm not a psychic, no one is IMHO. Even if I was, I would want to prove it was something I could do, not for money, but because it's something amazing. Why would one claim to be a psychic if you don't want notoriety? To me, it's like cliaming you can fly, but then saying I don't want anyone to know I can fly, or to be tested, but I can fly.
 
There have been many studies into the experimenter effect, in which a negative opinion affects the effectiveness of a 'psychic'. Various types of ESP have been shown under laboratory conditions for several decades now, to prove that such a thing exists.

The fact that we cannot control it or make it perform to command tells me of our ignorance at the moment, not that it will perform to command under laboratory conditions.

Psychic pair fail scientific test

A scientific experiment has found that two mediums were unable to demonstrate that they had special psychic powers.
The test by researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London, tried to establish whether mediums could use psychic abilities to identify something about five unseen volunteers.
The results, carried out under test conditions, did not show evidence of any unexplained powers of insight.
But medium Patricia Putt said this experiment "doesn't prove a thing".

This Halloween challenge was an attempt to investigate whether professional mediums could demonstrate their psychic powers in a controlled setting - by inviting them to deduce something about people they had never met and could not see or hear.

The experiment, designed by Chris French, head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, asked two professional mediums to write something about five individuals who were concealed behind a screen.
These five volunteers were then asked to try to identify themselves from these psychic readings - with a success rate of only one in five.
This was a result that was "entirely consistent with the operation of chance alone", said Professor French.

But one of the mediums, Patricia Putt, rejected the suggestion that this showed any absence of psychic powers - saying that she needed to work face-to-face with people or to hear their voice, so that a connection could be established.
"Psychic energy" was not likely to work in the setting created for the experiment, she said, and her success rate was usually very high.

Ms Putt said the experiment was designed to confirm the researchers' pre-conceptions - rather than examine the nature of her psychic ability.
"Scientists are very closed-minded," she said.
She said there were fraudsters operating as psychic mediums - but that it was wrong for scientists to think that such mediums "were all the same".

But Michael Marshall of the Merseyside Skeptics Society, who helped to organise the test, said it showed that claims to have special abilities "aren't based in reality".

Chris French annoys me so much with that well meaning look and tone of voice when he explains why people who believe in something he can't make perform like a monkey in a circus are deluded. I almost prefer the sneering and sheer bloody rudeness of James Randhi.

I agree but I often wonder why a true psychic would put themselves up for such ridicule, as I've said before I believe there are psychics out there who don't want to make money from their abilities and certainly don't want notoriety.
 
I'm in agreement with you. I'm always suspicious of anyone who turns it into a career. I have a friend who has an uncanny knack with tarot cards. He doesn't read them on demand, has an ordinary job and will only read them when he feel an urge to do so. He also doesn't tell people that he read cards, that he carries with him all the time.

He read mine once, and even though a friend, told me about stuff that was going to happen that he couldn't have known about, 'cos I didn't either. If you put him in this test he would, in all likelihood, have failed.
 
I'm in a strange middling position with this which might give some insight..or not.

I'm intrigued by the prominence this story has recieved as if its a break through in science and there weren't endless "scientists prove there IS" experiments that don't get such coverage (although to be fair, they usually do in the Mail!).

Someone on my Facebook is a proselytizing atheist and actually a member, I believe, of the Merseyside Sceptic Society that organised the test. This morning he put up the link sarcastically repeating the women's excuses and pointing out how fair and objective the experiment was, a paragon of scientific method....which the presence of a skeptic organisation would make me doubt. I wanted to comment, but as my mind went through what I might actually say to counteract his believes, it occurred to me instantly I could say nothing of any use...

I couldn't comment on the failures in the experimental process since I don't know them and to do so would only be showing my own prejudices and presumptions. I could quote the hundred years and more of experimental success....but despite having read countless books confirming the existence of psi and even mediumship to my satisfaction, if challenged to name these experiments and proofs the details are not locked in my head.
So the next tack I might have taken, it seemed to me, would be to lay out my stall. Which would be to say that I know for a fact that psi exists because I experience it, regularly, constantly, trivially, sometimes remarkably, but with such consistency that its as real a part of every day life to me as breaking wind or getting an itch. The mind extends beyond the brain is as incontrovertible to me as the colour of my eyes. But to this I would add that I am not in any way shape or form a psychic, nor believe that any person, least of all a paid entertainer, has some kind of special controllable super power.

The above paragraph might seem reasonable, but I realised to even say that creates difficulties. I've never been in a position of trying to "prove" the reality of my "psi" experiences to a daring me to prove him wrong sceptic, and it occurs to me I'd never bother trying. The first thing they'd demand is impressive stories...but its real nature to me is generally trivial..and any one trivial story of "I thought this and then it turned up" would not impress anyone, not even me. Chance, coincidence, misperception could be thrown at any individual anecdote and the tiresome phrase "the plural of anecdote is anecdotes" could be thrown at a catalogue of them, even if they all readily came to mind. I experience psi in my daily life, but its of no great significance and so I for one would never try and prove anythig to a sceptic at all. It would be an impossible task and serve me no benefit whatever.

The second thing that struck me is my own assertion that no one has special powers, "least of all paid entertainers"....and I realise I've nothing to base that on other then the same "I'm the standard by which all things can be judged" arrogance with which a committed sceptic might view MY claims about MY experiences! "It doesn't happen to me therefore I'm an expert and so it doesn't happen to anyone" is an outlook I and the sceptic clearly have in common. And so just as wrong. Maybe some people do have powers above and beyond, but they face the same obstacles in proving it to anyone who doesn't already accept it as I would. :/
