*cough* back packs *cough* .. and you can't watch a celebration remake of a grindhouse type classic in a safe environment .. the carpets have to be sticky, the seats have to be pre slashed, you have to be pre unsettled and in the wrong part of town to get the full experience as it was back in the day when it comes to films like The Evil Dead.

There never was what we would now recognise as a behind the scenes promotional video for The Evil Dead .. partly because it was a very low budget independent production, partly because any extra features were rare in '80 ..

All that's left these days of the original cabin used for The Evil Dead .. the chimney and the fake trapdoor hole .. the cabin burned down a long time ago. There's still some metal sheeting from the roof ..

One of my mates went on a pilgrimage from Shepperton to the States to visit Evil Dead locations. If you've got a spare 3 hours and 50 minutes, here's his rough footage .. he invited me along but I couldn't afford it sadly .. my mate was good enough to mail me a chimney brick, a small bit of the roof, some tree seeds, vines and some dirt from the cellar hole..

My agile, police-trained mind detects a connection between the two parts of that sentence.

You're not wrong Sherlock, most people do indeed take a souvenir brick.

edit: (the first fan group reported to have found the cabin site were a group called Goatlair about 18 years ago, they posted instructions on how to find the place online as well as the first photos since the film had been made. I printed all of this stuff in case the site ever went down. The site went down.

Goatlair took their chimney brick to a convention and presented it to a bemused Bruce Campbell who signed it and added "You guys are crazy!" ..

A time capsule was buried just after the original film wrapped .. some fans still try to find that to this day)

Here's an idea that'd make you financially independent:

a) Emigrate to the USA.

b) Buy tons of hardcore (rubble, not porn, you weirdo).

c) Buy a quarter-acre plot just out of sight of the original cabin.

d) Construct a replica of the cabin.

e) Set up signs and a parking area.

f) Pretend that you're looking after the attraction for its wealthy, obnoxious owner.

g) After you've taken the $15 "parking and entrance fee", subtly let your guests know that you'll turn a blind eye to their removing a souvenir brick. For an additional $50 cash.

We were all talking about actually doing that 15 + years ago .. fantasising more honestly .. more realistically, placing a brass plaque denoting the historical significance of the chimney remains but we decided it would probably be nicked and also the idea of putting on large screen screening all nighter at the site of all 3 films. There's a deep well hole there so we would have had to cover that, not to mention insurance, security, medical staff etc so it never happened. The site is also on privately owned land so anyone caught trespassing there could potentially be shot.

A new and way 'cleaner' version of Within The Woods, the proto version of The Evil Dead they all made to raise the funds through private investors to make The Evil Dead ..

... and Kevin Smith has been in talks with Bruce Campbell, Bruce might be getting a cameo in Mallrats 2 :)

edit: The film's title Evil Dead Now has been changed to Evil Dead Rise ... there's a rumour it will be set in a high rise building, it's been confirmed we're getting a new female lead.

Bruce rocking a quarantine beard .. sadly Evil Dead 4 will never happen but how cool would he look sporting this face furniture in it if there was going to be one ..

But when you employ Bruce Campbell you NEED to have the chin.
LOL .. I still think the beard would suit his character Ash in an (not happening) Evil Dead 4 ... he'd be a legendary folk hero living in a booby trapped cave, town locals would avoid him because he'd be a miserable bearded old bastard (and smell) but would be as hard as nails, also almost possible to get close to because everyone he loved died.

The ancient evil would be reawakened, Ash would do his thing as usual, the town would start to love him, he wouldn't give a shit either way then he'd do something stupid again the end of the film. It's not an Evil Dead film if it doesn't have a bad ending for Ash J Williams.

Ash already had his ending in the TV show... the ending was, he doesn't have an ending, he just keeps on fighting into the future...

Hail To The Deadites, an Evil Dead documentary is having its "International Premiere" at Frightfest's online fest this August. There are trailers for this dating back to 2015, is I guess it's long in the making!

One of my friends and fellow mods from Deadites.net is in this (Elise Holmes), my name was also put forward by someone to be interviewed (it's about the Evil Dead fan scene) but they couldn't afford to come to England and I couldn't afford to get to America. I put forward Rob McClaine's name as a wealthier UK Evil Dead geek but he works at Shepperton Film studios full time making sugar glass through his own company for films so he was too busy. Rob once invited me to go to Tennessee with him to visit the location of the original cabin (long since burned down) but again I couldn't afford it. He did though phone me while he was standing at the exact spot the cabin had been in in the woods at some ridiculous hour in the morning which I loved. I can honestly boast now that I've taken a phone call from the real Evil Dead cabin. He also bought back a small bit of the roof for me which I still have .. displayed next to my cabin chimney brick, ornate glass bottle of cellar hole dirt, leaves and vines :).

Rob also visited the fake cabin from Evil Dead 2, it was mostly collapsed when he visited and is no longer there, the owners wanted it cleared off their land.

A different American crew of fans heard that the cabin was going to be torn down to be completely removed and contacted the land owners who agreed to let them take anything they wanted. The famous tool shed was still standing so they carefully dismantled it, labelled every piece, took it home and re built it. They now take it to horror conventions, re building it every time. Evil Dead fans are obsessive. We make Furrys look normal.

I need to finish off watching these films.

Next year sees the UK Blu-Ray release of Sam Raimi's Crime Wave (made between Evil Dead 1 and 2) with Bruce on the extras talking about their early days. Raimi quickly disowned this though... "I wouldn't even use it as filler in a porno." :D

After the colossal success of The Evil Dead, director Sam Raimi teamed up with the Coen brothers (fresh from Blood Simple) to make his next film, Crimewave, an unusual mixture of screwball comedy, film noir and B-movie homage.

Raimi’s film tells the bizarre story of a security-system installer, Vic (Reed Birney), who finds himself in the electric chair when he falls in love with Nancy (Sheree J Wilson), a femme fatale on the run from two bumbling exterminators ‘of all sizes’ (Paul L Smith, Popeye, and Brion James, Blade Runner).

A notoriously troubled production which flopped upon its original release, Crimewave can now be enjoyed as a riotously entertaining showcase for Raimi and the Coens, which also benefits from a highly amusing performance from cult-horror star Bruce Campbell.

Sam Raimi had a great anecdote regarding The Evil Dead cabin that he'd sometimes share with journalists ..

When they'd decided to film there, they were driving up to the cabin for the first time and met a local who asked Sam "Have you met Annie yet?" .. they shook their heads and were told this ..

The cabin was built in the late 1800's. A little girl called Annie lived there with her grandparents. One night there was a thunder and lightning storm and Annie ran into her grandparent's bedroom frightened only to find them both dead. The little girl ran into the woods screaming until she was rescued and handed over to the authorities. It turned out that her grandparents had both died of natural causes so Annie was placed into care. She never recovered from this and as an adult she was sent to a local insane asylum where she's lived ever since. Now a very old woman, Annie will still sometimes leave the asylum during stormy nights and walk back to the cabin so the locals have to calm her down and take her back ..

They never did meet 'Annie' but the night after they'd finished filming at the cabin, there was a storm and the cabin was hit by lightning, burning it to the ground.

..... except that's all bullshit. Sam just made it all up for a laugh. The truth is the cabin was built as a hunting lodge in the late 50's, an extension was added to it in the early 60's, it was abandoned for less than 20 years and the only reason the cabin burned down was because some local kids had been drinking there a few weeks after filming had wrapped and decided to torch the place.

I much prefer Sam Raimi's version though.

(Someone I know at the cabin's remains these days)

Drinking moonshine, smoking weed, armed bible belt dog hunting teams walking through, washing your contact lenses with coffee, Sam Raimi getting hit in the chest by a log and flaking out, the cabin full of cow and goat shit, no electricity or hot water, begging for funds to complete your film in freezing temperatures and getting anyone available to wear wigs to be filmed from behind and management playing practical jokes any chance the got because they were all in their early 20's ... making The Evil Dead:
