From the above link re allegations against Smith...

"We know too that they appeared in police reports, though Lancashire police have said recently they can't find those reports — though they accept they carried out an investigation and it is suggested a report was pushed to the director of public prosecutions back in 1969."

Funny what goes missing in police stations.
Sir Cyril Smith sex abuse dossier seized by MI5
A dossier of sexual abuse allegations against Sir Cyril Smith, the late Liberal Democrat MP, which police claimed was "lost" was actually seized by MI5, according to a former special branch officer.
By Steven Swinford
10:00PM GMT 14 Nov 2012

Tony Robinson, a special branch officer with Lancashire Police in the 1970s, said he saw a police dossier which was “thick” with allegations from boys claiming they had been abused by Sir Cyril.
He said that after taking the file out of the safe at special branch headquarters in Hatton, Preston, he was contacted by an officer from MI5 who told him it needed to be sent to London.

Mr Robinson also disclosed that the then Director of Public Prosecutions had examined the allegations but decided they were “not in the public interest”.
He said: ”The police now say the file is lost. It seems like there was a complete cover up to me.”

In 1974 the Conservatives invited the Liberals to form a Coalition government in which Smith could have been appointed a minister.

According to Mr Robinson a copy of the report from Lancashire Police was passed to Special Branch, which dealt with national security and intelligence.
Mr Robinson, who had a previous interest in the case, said he read Sir Cyril’s file. He said: “I looked through Sir Cyril’s file which was kept in a safe in our office.
“It was thick full of statements from young boys alleging abuse. It had been prepared for prosecution.
Written across the top of it were the words: 'No further action, not in the public interest. DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions].’

“Shortly after taking it out I was called by an MI5 officer. They asked if I had the file on Mr Cyril Smith, and said: 'Please have this sent down to London.”

On Tuesday Simon Danczuk, the Labour MP for Smith’s former constituency in Rochdale, described him as a “29 stone bully” who “imposed himself” on his victims whom he “humiliated and terrified”.
Mr Danczuk said some alleged victims had only now come forward in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal and it was time to find out “why was this allowed to happen”.

Smith’s brother, Norman, said he was “staggered” the MP was blackening the name of Sir Cyril, who died in 2010, adding that the police found at the time that there was no case to answer.

Barry Fitton, a former resident of the Cambridge House hostel in Rochdale, told the website politicshome.com that when he was 15 Smith would make him strip, smacked his bare bottom and then stroked his buttocks.
On another occasion, Smith subjected him to a “medical” that involved him stroking his thighs and testicles.

Another former resident, Eddie Shorrock, who was 17, said Smith, who founded the hostel and had keys to its premises, also gave him a “medical” whenever he took time off work.

Mr Danczuk said a third victim, who wished to remain anonymous, had contacted him today to describe the “abuse meted out by Sir Cyril”.
Rumours about child abuse dogged Smith for much of his life, and appeared in a local magazine and in Private Eye in 1979.

Mr Danczuk, referring to the recent Rochdale grooming scandal, said:
“Attempts to suppress the truth are not new in Rochdale.
“Sir Cyril Smith was a political giant in Rochdale but his career was continually dogged by allegations that he had abused boys...these allegations must be properly investigated and the seriousness of the victims’ complaints must be acknowleged.
“Young boys were humiliated, terrified and reduced to quivering wrecks by this 29-stone bully imposing himself on them.”
Mr Danczuk made the comments during a debate on child sexual exploitation.

A CPS spokesperson said: “We cannot confirm at this stage whether the CPS, or any previous DPP’s office, received a file of evidence in relation to Cyril Smith, but we are currently doing what we can to double check available records.”

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said they were not planning to investigate the matter as there are no current allegations pending.
He added: “We believe there was an investigation in the late 1960s but as no records are now held it cannot be ascertained whether a file was passed to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“These historic allegations date back more than 40 years and to a time when Rochdale was within the Lancashire Constabulary area.
“While we take matters such as this extremely seriously we have not received any further allegations and at this time there is no ongoing investigation in relation to this matter.”

Oh no, not the hairy cornflake as well! ...

Former Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis has been arrested as part of the police probe set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal, the BBC understands.

Police said a man in his 60s from Bedfordshire was being held on suspicion of sexual offences.

The Met said their investigation into alleged abuse by Savile and others - Operation Yewtree - had so far recorded 200 allegations of sexual assault.

They have now identified about 450 potential victims of sexual abuse.

The arrest of Mr Travis, 67, is the fourth so far in connection with the Savile investigation.

In a statement, the Met said the latest arrest "falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Others'", meaning the allegations are unrelated to Savile.

But the force said that the "vast majority" of the 450 possible victims were alleging sexual abuse by former BBC TV presenter and DJ Savile, who died last year aged 84.

Mr Travis has not been officially named by police.

The DJ - known by the nicknames DLT and the Hairy Cornflake - is best known for his 25-year stint on Radio 1.

His career on the station came to an end in 1993 when he resigned on-air from his role, telling listeners he was unhappy with changes that were taking place.

Mr Travis also presented editions of Top of the Pops in the 1970s and 1980s.

He now presents The DLT Show for the Magic network.

Sir Cyril Smith abuse claims: Blue plaque taken down

A blue plaque honouring the late Rochdale MP Sir Cyril Smith has been taken down following allegations that he indecently assaulted young boys.
The council said removing the plaque from Rochdale Town Hall was a "neutral act" to prevent vandalism.

On Tuesday, Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk called for a "full investigation" into allegations that Sir Cyril indecently assaulted boys in care.
Sir Cyril's brother said the former MP had denied the allegations.

The plaque was unveiled last year by former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell.

Councillor Colin Lambert (Labour), the leader of Rochdale Council, said: "This is not a judgement on either Sir Cyril Smith or anyone else."
He added: "We discussed this at a meeting last night and had decided to leave it up but we received information that it could be damaged overnight and took it down because this would be a danger to the town hall."

On Wednesday Barry Fitton, one of three alleged victims from a Rochdale care home, claimed that the former MP smacked him and stroked his buttocks.

Mr Danczuk (Labour) told the Commons that claims against the late MP had "circulated for years".
Lancashire Police said an investigation was "believed" to have taken place in the 1960s, but "no records are held".
Mr Danczuk said police "should consider reopening the case".

Manchester-based solicitors Pannone confirmed they were currently dealing with an allegation of abuse against Sir Cyril, who died in 2010.

On a more trivial note, this is playing havoc with the Top of the Pops repeats. Kid Jensen was a nice guy, wasn't he? Someone tell me Kid Jensen was a nice guy!

I only remember David Jensen as a VJ on an oldies music video show on Sky Trax aired on Sky Channel in the 80s. He seemed like a nice guy. Remember he played 60s and 70s music. He was one of the two "old" VJs on Sky Trax together with Tony Blackburn. Pat Sharp and the rest was in their 20s.

Thanks. He introduced Peter Powell at the end of the TOTP repeat last night: we're in safe hands.

BBC crisis: Lord McAlpine seeks larger ITV damages

Lord McAlpine will seek a larger payout from ITV than the £185,000 he received over his libel claim against the BBC, his lawyers have confirmed.
They contacted ITV after presenter Phillip Schofield handed the prime minister a list of alleged abusers live on the This Morning show on 8 November.
ITV said disciplinary action had been taken following the incident.

The BBC settled with Lord McAlpine over a Newsnight report that led to him being wrongly accused of child abuse.
The damages, agreed 13 days after the broadcast, totalled £185,000 plus costs.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has launched an investigation into the incident on ITV1's This Morning.
An ITV spokesman said: "We have received correspondence from Lord McAlpine's representatives and we will be responding in due course."

The BBC and ITV are the first of a number of organisations and individuals to face legal action after Lord McAlpine was wrongly linked to child abuse. These include a large number of Twitter users who made false claims.
The Newsnight broadcast on 2 November was about historical allegations of child abuse at care homes in north Wales.
Former Tory party treasurer Lord McAlpine was not named in the broadcast but he was incorrectly linked to the claims on the internet.

An inquiry by BBC Scotland director Ken MacQuarrie concluded that Newsnight had failed to complete "basic journalistic checks".

Lord McAlpine said after settling his claim with the BBC: "I have been conscious that any settlement will be paid by the licence fee-payers, and have taken that into account in reaching agreement with the BBC.
"We will now be continuing to seek settlements from other organisations that have published defamatory remarks and individuals who have used Twitter to defame me."

The Newsnight broadcast led to the resignation of BBC director general George Entwistle, who has been replaced by acting director general Tim Davie. The BBC has previously apologised for the broadcast.

Sir Cyril Smith: Former MP sexually abused boys, police say

Sir Cyril Smith was a sex abuser of boys in the late 1960s, police admit.
The news comes as the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) accepts he should have been charged with the crimes more than 40 years ago.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the boys "were victims of physical and sexual abuse" by the late Rochdale MP.

Despite not being charged, after inquiries in 1970, 1998, and 1999, the CPS stressed changes in procedure mean a prosecution would be pursued today.

Evidence now made public indicates a file was compiled by Lancashire Constabulary in 1970, contained allegations made by eight men that they had been subjected to indecent assaults by Sir Cyril, when they were teenagers.

It was handed to the first Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Norman Skelhorn, and contained statements that were very similar in nature among the eight alleged victims, the CPS confirmed.

However, the only documentation still remaining is a one page letter Mr Skelhorn wrote to the Chief Constable of Lancashire on 19 March 1970 about Sir Cyril, who died in September 2010.
In it, he stated: "I do not consider that if proceedings for indecent assault were to be taken against Smith, there would be a reasonable prospect of conviction."

Nazir Afzal, chief prosecutor for the CPS in the North West, has now accepted that this "way of thinking bears little resemblance to how such cases are assessed today".
"The decision made by the CPS in 1970 would not be made today," he admitted.

The Lancashire Police investigation centred on offences committed between 1961 and 1965 when the boys were either living at Cambridge House Children's Home or were "dependent on Cyril Smith for either employment, financial support or some sort of guardianship", said Mr Afzal.

etc, etc...

This is getting to be an anti-nostalgia where it proves the 1970s were awful and full of awful people doing awful things.

People will be hard pressed to watch TOTP with Jimmy Saville from the 70s for nostalgic reasons from now on.

I can't believe this at all.
My grip on reality is being challenged - all the icons of the 70s can't be evil, can they?

I'm feeling only mild surprise with each revelation. Having been a teenage girl in the 70s, with the experience of being constantly sexually propositioned by 'respectable' older men, I have no illusions about how powerful men might have treated young girls. :(

Please be careful.

Operation Yewtree officers arrest man

Metropolitan Police officers have arrested another man as part of Operation Yewtree, the investigation into historic sex offences.
In a brief statement, Scotland Yard said that officers had arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.
The man was arrested at 07:40 GMT on suspicion of sexual offences and taken to a central London police station.
The individual is the sixth to be questioned as part of the operation.

The Metropolitan Police launched Operation Yewtree after revelations that the late Jimmy Savile sexually abused young people during his broadcasting career. The Yewtree investigation has three separate parts.
One is looking at the actions of Jimmy Savile while the other two strands are investigations into allegations against "Savile and others" and, separately, complaints against other people.

Scotland Yard said the man arrested on Thursday morning had been arrested as part of the last category of the operation.
Overall, five people have been arrested and a sixth has been questioned as part of the investigations, sparked after the scale of Jimmy Savile's abuse was uncovered.

Beyond the police, the Department of Health are investigating into its own conduct in appointing Jimmy Savile to lead a "taskforce" to oversee the management of high security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor in 1998 and it is also probing Savile's activities at Broadmoor, Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary.

The Director of Public Prosecutions is also reviewing a historic decision by the Crown Prosecution Service not to prosecute Savile amid allegations before he died.
