A 78 year-old woman whose arm was ripped off in a freak accident was attempting to close the windows of her neighbour's car, it has emerged.
The pensioner – who has been now been named as Maggie Hayes – was airlifted to hospital after her arm was ripped off in the shocking accident on Penmare Close, Hayle, just after 4pm on Saturday.
At first it was thought the elderly woman was injured in her own car, but it has now emerged it was a Peugeot Blue Partner Tepee owned by next-door neighbour, 71 year-old Gillian Davies.
The grandmother-of-one said she left her car with the windows down because it was a hot day, but she has 'no idea' why her neighbour leaned into her car.
She said: ''I heard a hell of a bang and it didn't register that it was in our driveway. I thought 'what the hell is that?'
"Then I heard screams and then I came out - I don't want to think about it. She was sitting by the wall.
"Everyone came running out and handed her blankets. She lost a lot of blood."
Mrs Davies added: "No one seems to know what happened. I left the car as I always leave it: in gear, with the keys in the ignition. I won't be doing that again.
"The windows were down because it was a hot day. I don't know why she came to our car."
John Hayes, 81, who is thought to be the husband of the 78 year-old, confirmed she had lost a limb, adding: "Yes, she has lost an arm".
He was then led back into the house by two young men.
The police said that the woman had lent into the car to close the electric windows when it lurched forward trapping her arm.
A Devon and Cornwall spokesperson said. "What appears to have happened is that she has lent into the car to close the electric windows.
''She has turned on the ignition to get the power to turn the electric windows to close but unfortunately the car was in gear and the car has lurched forward trapping her hand/arm,
"In the process of doing that it has taken her arm off."
Mrs Davies said her husband Roger, 72, had been hit by the car and was taken to hospital
but does not remember the incident.
Emergency services teams were able to retrieve the arm and the pensioner was flown by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.
Police added although the pensioner had suffered "life-changing injuries" it is hoped surgeons will be able to re-attach the arm and she will make a good recovery.
The car has been taken away by police.

All in all, a right clusterfuck.
At least the police arrested the car.
