Yeah, the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Think he does it in New Nightmare too. Slenderman is a real patchwork of what have become tired horror movie clichés. Still looking forward to Phantasm V, mind you.

Sadly, 'Phantasm V' was scrapped a few years back.

I like it as it stands, with enough mysteries to tease the mind-I'll be watching my collection comes Halloween!

Phantasm V was scrapped, which was why it was such a nice surprise a few weeks ago for its trailer to be released. It's back on!

A lawyer for a Wisconsin girl accused of luring a classmate into the woods and repeatedly stabbing her to please Slenderman said on Tuesday his client still believes in the fictional Internet character and is unfit to stand trial.

Morgan Geyser and her friend Anissa Weier were both 12 when they were charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide in the attack on a friend the morning after a sleepover in late May in Waukesha, a suburb west of Milwaukee.

The girls told investigators they attacked their friend to impress Slenderman, a tall, online bogeyman that they insisted was real, according to a criminal complaint.

Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Michael Bohren on Tuesday scheduled a Dec. 18 competency hearing for Geyser so that her attorney Anthony Cotton can challenge an expert report that found her mentally competent to stand trial.

Cotton said on Tuesday his client still believes that Slenderman is real and he believes that she is unfit to stand trial based on interactions with her and discussions with doctors. ...

Slenderman has been spotted in the Midlands!!!!

According to the Huffington Post....

Slender Man Creation Now Said To Be 'Haunting British Beauty Spot Cannock Chase'

Slender Man, the fictional internet character blamed for a spate of brutal attacks in the US, is now said to be haunting a Staffordshire beauty spot.

Cannock Chase is already home to an eerie entity known as the “black-eyed child”, and now a sighting of the 8ft tall horror character has been reported at the same spot.

Slender Man has been cited in an upcoming court case for two girls who allegedly attacked a friend of the same age at a slumber party, stabbing her 19 times and leaving her in the woods in Wisconsin in May 2014.

Miraculously Payton Leutner survived and managed to crawl to a nearby road where she was found by a cyclist who raised the alarm.

The suspects, both of whom have been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, have claimed they were trying to prove the existence of Slender Man. After the attack the pair were found walking toward a national forest where they said they believed Slender Man lived in a mansion.

Slender Man was created in 2009 as part of an online competition calling for scary images

According to Know Your Meme, which tracks internet trends, Slenderman came into being in 2009 after an entry for a competition on the online forums Something Awful to create “paranormal pictures” was submitted by Eric Knudsen.

The popularity of the character promptly exploded, with numerous fan sites creating their own Slender Man stories, putting him in fan art, videos, video games and other media. Some websites host what appear to be photographs of him, lending the made up character an air of authenticity.

Knudsen’s creation appears to be a mysterious figure who stalks children.

He is most distinctive for his blank, featureless face, his extreme height and dapper appearance – (“He often keeps his long, pale hands crossed politely behind his back or hanging loosely at his sides. He has long coattails which he lets flow proudly. He wears long dress shoes, which are always shined a perfect, gleaming black”).

According to some descriptions, he has between four and eight long black tentacles, which protrude from his back. He is also said to be capable of causing memory loss, insomnia, paranoia and coughing fits.

Paranormal investigator Lee Brickley has visited the area numerous times to probe the mystery.

He has supplied the following eyewitness account to Huffington Post UK:

Date: 2nd January 2015

Location: Castle Ring

Time: 02:00am

Report: While taking a midnight stroll around Castle Ring last Friday morning, I happened to notice a strange figure in the distance. It appeared to rise out of the trees and hover over the path around 100m in front of me. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the stories of Spring-Heeled Jack, but if you have, this thing seemed to look pretty similar to all those old artists impressions. It was very dark, but I could see it clearly because of the lights coming from Rugeley. It was also a pretty clear night. If I were to compare it to anything, I would say it looked like a stereotypical Victorian gentleman. Long black overcoat with a Homburg hat. Except, I know this was no flying human. I know that because it had blood red eyes that shone in the night sky. It also had a mouth full of teeth that seemed to look like razors. Whatever it was, it stopped hovering and descended back into the trees. Needless to say, I did not investigate any further.

Brickley has also been alerted to three other alleged Slender Man sightings in the area – alarmingly inside houses.

In one report from Pye Green dated 19 December 2014, the witness said:

I was awoken yesterday morning just before 2am by an odd scratching noise in my bedroom. I instantly sat upright in bed in an attempt to discover whatever was causing the sound. To my astonishment, there was what seemed like a sphere-shaped shadow by the edge of my wardrobe. As I tried to get out of bed and investigate further, the shadow began to stretch towards the ceiling. It was at that point I found myself faced with the most disgusting and horrific creature imaginable. It was about 8 feet tall, and had a white face with razor sharp fangs. It almost looked like a vampire. I fell back into my bed and the creature started moving towards me. Its arms stretched out to almost twice their original length, and I felt claws scraping at my skin. I let out a scream in fear for my life, and the creature retreated back into the corner of my room. It then shrank back down into a ball and slowly faded away.

A further sighting, dated 27 November 2014 from Slitting Mill said:

I don’t really know who else to turn to. The weirdest thing happened last night, and I just don’t know what to make of it. At half past two in the morning while I was sleeping, I heard a bang that woke me from my dream. As my eyes opened, I saw a man floating over me. He was so close that I would have headbutted him if I moved an inch. I could see into his eyes. They were a fierce red colour that shook me to my very core. Although he didn’t speak, I knew what he was thinking. It was as though he was talking to me telepathically. He definitely wanted to hurt me, but there was something stopping him. It was almost like he was someone gaining power from scaring me though. Maybe something bad will happen when he gets strong enough? For what it’s worth, I’m not a nutcase, and I work for a local business of which you will be familiar. It just seemed the anger in his eyes grew stronger as I was feeling more scared. The ordeal ended when the man (who was completely dressed in black with a hat to match) floated higher and higher above my until he hit my ceiling and disappeared.

Brickley told HuffPost UK he believes some of the incidences can be put down to sleep paralysis, a temporary inability to move or speak that happens when you’re waking up or, less commonly, falling asleep.

He said: “I am drawn towards the idea of sleep paralysis due to the fact that three of the sightings happened at night when the victims were in bed.

“However, that doesn’t explain the sighting at Castle Ring. I think that could be a genuine paranormal encounter.

“Cannock Chase is considered by many to be a portal area. It could be that people see whatever they fear most, yet it is the same force or entity that scares them

Those sound more like The H******* C******* V****** than Slenderman.

Sounds more like jumping on an internet bandwagon than any actual entity.

Those H******* C******* V******s, they're nothing but trouble.

*doesn't know what they are are either*

I was trying to Google the experiment those U.S. students did where they created a back story for a ghost and then some started reporting manifestations of the ghost as real events - somebody here will know the case. Perhaps by acknowledging the Slenderman they're bringing into existence? But then again I know of many crazy Fortean stories and I've yet to have a robotic Sasquatch march across my lawn or indeed be abducted, probed and released...so mibbees no.
It'd be interesting to know if any of the Cannock Chase storytellers had prior knowledge of Slenderman before claiming he'd popped up in their bedrooms at night.

So some form of tulpa?

Yeah excatly. I can't remember it's name but I can recall reading even on these boards of a bunch of students who created a back story for a ghost, giving him a name, a life before his death and then some of the students started reporting that the ghost was actually haunting them. Same thing with Slenderman I'm proposing. Give it enough energy, believe it's real enough and PING! It manifests as a reality.

You're probably thinking of this:

With this in mind, I wish to take a look at a relatively modern example of the creation of a ghost named Philip. During the 1970s a group from the Toronto Society for Psychical Research, along with a Dr. A.R.G. Owen (who was a mathematician) meet in order to see if they could, in essence, create a ghost. The group was comprised of Dr. Owen, his wife, a former chairperson of Mensa, an industrial designer, an accountant, a housewife, a bookkeeper and a sociology student. Additionally a psychologist by the name of Dr. Joel Whitton would also attend some of their experiments. The original idea was that this group of people could create a ghost seemingly by meditating on the idea of him including the history of the ghost. They would then attempt to make contact with this discarnate entity through séances and gain information from it.

I'm pretty sure we have/had a thread on this, but don't have time to search now.

The thread dedicated to the Philip Experiment is:

That's the story Rynner, thanks. For some reason I had the name "Pepper" as the ghosts name but that's a stage effect.

...and I had the name Paul in mind - well, right initial!

Here's an update in today's Independent on the trial of the two 12yo girls, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...nal-online-character-court-told-10054024.html

''The court was shown a mutilated Barbie doll belonging to one of the two alleged attackers''

Whilst there are many other attributions/interpretations for the main symbol depicted upon the torso of this doll (including random meaninglessness) , I take it that the media and the world in general has no concern whatsoever that an X within a circle is the putative symbol for the "X Files" tv/movie franchise?

Is this entire 'trial' perhaps just a media construct, as forcedly-incorporeal and self-referring as the Slender story itself? A multilayered but intrinsically-circular project of the Blair Witch variety?

The girls are being tried in an adult court so that the DA can get publicity. Thats what happens when these roles are subject to election.

The Wisconsin case was back in the news yesterday:
''Slender Man stabbing: Wisconsin girls must be tried as adults, judge says''
Friday 13 March 2015 21.43 GMT
Waukesha County Circuit judge Michael Bohren spent a month deliberating over the evidence provided during a two-day preliminary trial last month before deciding that the girls should be charged with first-degree murder in adult court.

Attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, etc. Should be enough to put them away for a while at least.

But the problem is that they might well end up being sentenced to fifty years in prison. They are disturbed children. They DO need to be put somewhere which is able to deal with their psychosis.

They shouldn't be tried as adults just because elected judges and DAs want to appear tough on crime.

Are they Psychotic? Usually there is a court session to determine wether they are fit to plead. Not really followed this case but have they been assessed by a court and independant psychiatrists?

There seems to be conflicting evidence. But you can have a serously warped view of the world and still be fit to plead. They genuinely believed in the existence of the Slenderman; that does suggest some disorder in their thought processes.

By that reasoning, there are an awful lot of people with disordered thought processes. Even if you limit the criteria to belief in an entity that can be absolutely proven to have been invented by a specific person/s or group/s, that's still a worryingly large number. (I was going to mention Scientologists en masse, but I don't want to risk bringing deity-based religion into the thread)

I do agree that the girls need psych help rather than decades in prison, of course. Unfortunately, politics aside, after the amount of coverage the case has had, people will want someone to be punished in some way.
