A volcano in The Democratic Republic of Congo has erupted, causing thousands of people to flee their homes.

"Thousands of people have fled their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a large volcano erupted.

Fountains of high lava burst from Mount Nyiragongo into the night sky forming a thick red cloud over the town of Goma, which has a population of two million.

The lava flow reached the city's airport but has reportedly now stopped.

The volcano, located 10km (six miles) from Goma, last erupted in 2002 killing 250 people and making 120,000 homeless."

Etna is having a major eruption right now.

The DR Congo is in fear of deadly gases being released from a lake near the city of Goma.

"A sinister threat is lurking beneath a lake near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Scientists say underground magma has been flowing toward Lake Kivu since the deadly eruption of the nearby Mount Nyiragongo volcano on Saturday.

An eruption from under the lake could trigger the release of a lethal, suffocating cloud of gas, experts fear.

Known as a limnic eruption, this event poses a rare but potentially catastrophic risk to Goma's residents."

There is some misinformation circulating on Nyiragongo in DR Congo via "end times/earth changes" sites suggesting that Lake Kivu is already affected and on fire. It's not. There is a mistakenly cited picture/video of a boat fire going around. But it could be a hazard. If lava emerges under the lake (the magma chamber is there) or if lava from the surface flows into the lake and affects the layers, the lake can overturn, release methane and CO2 and every person and animal in the area will be in sudden peril. They are already in a significant humanitarian crisis due to the evacuation. I have more information here. https://spookygeology.com/nyiragongo-eruption-misinformation-alert/

There is a report today that there is a water crisis there too cause by the volcano.

"Nearly 500,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been left without clean drinking water after a volcano erupted, the charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has warned.

It says because cholera is endemic and poses a great threat there is an urgent need to provide people in the eastern city of Goma with safe drinking water.

A reservoir and pipes were damaged when Mount Nyiragongo erupted on 22 May.

Hundreds of thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes."

Etna has eruprted so much this year it's grown 100 feet taller in the last 6 months.
Mount Etna is 100 feet taller than it was 6 months ago

Mount Etna, Europe's tallest and most active volcano, has erupted so much in the past six months, it has grown about 100 feet (30 meters) in height, satellite images reveal.

The youngest and most active of Etna's four summit craters — the southeastern crater — is now the tallest part of the volcano, towering 11,013 feet (3,357 m) above sea level, the tallest it has been in recorded history, according to the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), located at the foot of Mount Etna in Catania, Sicily.

This sudden growth spurt is the result of about 50 eruptions at the southeastern crater since Feb. 16, 2021, which have led to a "conspicuous transformation of the shape of the volcano," the INGV reported ... Scientists discovered the explosive growth while analyzing images taken by the Earth-imaging Pléiades satellites on July 13 and July 25. ...

Canary Island volcano erupts.

"LA PALMA, Spain, Sept 19 (Reuters) - A volcano erupted on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma on Sunday, sending fountains of lava and a plume of smoke and ash into the air from the Cumbre Vieja national park in the south of the island.

Authorities had already begun evacuating the infirm and some farm animals from the surrounding villages before the eruption, which took place on a wooded slope in the Cabeza de Vaca area at 3:15 p.m. (1415 GMT), according to the islands' government."

Hang on, isn't this the one that will send a huge megatsunami towards the US East Coast?

If it is to blow up, that is a slight possibility.

My sister owns an apartment on Tenerife, on the side not facing La Palma so it's probably safe.

She mostly needs to watch out for earthquakes. Hope it doesn't erupt too much.

Yes, but ... There's ongoing debate about the prospects for cross-Atlantic mega-tsunami effects that were first predicted back around the turn of the century.

Both the earlier description of the threat and an update on the risk and the debate can be found at:

Yeah, I guess a megatsunami would happen, but by the time it reached Europe or the USA, the effects might not be so huge.

I don't think I would be standing that close.

In about 6 months time, when a whole new island has been created by the lava flows, the news reports will contain the line "...since when the volcano first started erupting..."

I hope it's not producing any gases that are harmful to the atmosphere......

That's our CO2 target shot to pieces!
If you're in Spain, I expect so, yes.

And looking on the googly maps I see that the Island currently undergoing this eruptive transformation is the one which 'experts' predict that, were it to suddenly slide sideways into the sea, would create a tsunami which would destroy the US eastern seaside.

The lava flow continues, with more and more people being evacuated.
The flow is now approaching the seashore, where it becomes a whole different beast.

When lava comes into contact with ocean water, it produces a gas plume known as laze.
A portmanteau of lava and haze, laze forms through a series of chemical reactions as hot lava boils the colder sea water.
"It creates a steam of hydrochloric acid, water vapour and bits of ash," Dr Andrews said. "Obviously, it's not good to breathe in."
He said volcanic explosions were possible, too. Lava entering sea water creates "a pressure-cooker situation" that "might fling out volcanic debris", he said.
