Someone commented below the article wondering if someone is covering something up and there is more to it than we are being told.
Detectives believe he was the target of an attack and are following a ‘positive line of inquiry’.
Dogwalkers found the body of William Leiper, 31, at the site of a fire near a kids’ play area in Glasgow’s Househill Park on August 4.
He had his fingertips hacked off and was so badly injured that initial post-mortem examinations failed to find a cause of death.
Before his death, Mr Leiper was charged with a string of sex attacks and violent assaults on a woman over several years, the Daily Record reported.
He was acquitted of all charges at Glasgow High Court on July 30.
Sources close to the investigation told the newspaper he was a valium dealer and may have been involved in a ‘turf war’ with rivals.
The 31-year-old was also said to have been charged with the attempted rape of a 15-year-old girl.
Reminds me of the 'match girls' who suffered terribly with 'phossy jaw'
ETA: from my memory of The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes, the mercury nitrate was used to raise the nap of the fur/felt.“mad as a hatter,” .. the expression is linked to the hat-making industry and mercury poisoning. In the 18th and 19th centuries, industrial workers used a toxic substance, mercury nitrate, as part of the process of turning the fur of small animals, such as rabbits, into felt for hats. Workplace safety standards often were lax and prolonged exposure to mercury caused employees to develop a variety of physical and mental ailments, including tremors (dubbed “hatter’s shakes”), speech problems, emotional instability and hallucinations.

Three men in Ohio died this week after entering a manure pit and passing out from the fumes, according to news reports.
The men, who were brothers, had entered the manure pit to fix a pump, according to local news outlet KDKA. They were knocked unconscious by the fumes and became trapped in the pit, where first responders found them on Tuesday (Aug. 10) ... The men were rescued and taken to local hospitals. All three men died at the hospital that same day ...
Manure pits, which are used to store animal waste for use as fertilizer, produce toxic gases that can be deadly. Decomposing manure produces hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia and carbon dioxide, all of which can be hazardous to humans and animals at high concentrations ...
From the HSE website. My Mum was a milliner. Thankfully, she never got to make those felt hats and she only pursued that career for a few years. Her friend Pauline carried on doing it and was exposed to benzene. Pauline now has a rare form of blood cancer.
I suppose, slightly better to pass out from the fumes first when drowning in slurryThere's been another manure pit death trap incident, and this time it claimed 3 lives.

Good call. From now on I will wear the gloves to fill the car. From the HSE website.
Work with benzene is subject to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 1999. It is classified as a carcinogen and has been assigned a 'skin' notation, indicating the possibility of significant skin absorption. Benzene can cause serious health problems. Immediate effects of high inhalation exposure can include headache, tiredness, nausea and dizziness, and unconsciousness may occur if exposure is very high. Long-term exposure to benzene can result in serious blood disorders such as anaemia and leukaemia.
Make sure you wear those plastic gloves when filling the car. Last thing you want is to spill petrol or diesel over your hands.
I think all men have this problem.Fuel pumps in petrol/gas stations are so incredibly badly designed.
For some reason they all have the 'parked' position for the handle with the nozzle pointing upwards, which just means that any drips run back down onto the trigger part (you know what I mean even if I'm not using the correct descriptors for the various bits).
I could never figure this out - it seems so stupid. Surely it would be much cleaner (and safer) if the pump handle/nozzle combo dropped into a receptacle the same as the hole in the side of your vehicle where the fuel goes in?
Then any rogue drips would just drip off the end, and not back down onto the bit you hold.
I think that usually happens though when you pull it out the hole too soon after useI think all men have this problem.

Authorities in Mariposa County, California, are trying to determine why a family of three and their dog died on a remote hiking trail in the Sierra National Forest near Yosemite National Park.
Search and rescue workers found the bodies of John Gerrish, Ellen Chung, their one-year-old daughter, Miju, and the family dog on Tuesday near the Devil's Gulch area in the Southfork of the Merced River drainage, the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. ...
They had been reported missing on Monday night.
There were no immediate signs of trauma to the family members, no suicide notes, or any other clear indications of what caused their deaths ...
First responders initially treated the area as a possible hazmat scene because of concerns that carbon monoxide from nearby mines could have poisoned the family.
Last month, the US Forest Service warned that toxic algae had been discovered in the Merced River and urged people not to swim, wade or allow their pets to drink the water.
The bodies have been recovered and are being autopsied, but Mitchell said they will likely have to wait for toxicology results -- which could take weeks -- to determine the cause of death. ...
[Authorities said] .. the family was well prepared for a day hike. ...
Mystery prevails over how her clothes became caught on the door, but coroner James Adeley described it as ‘extraordinarily bad luck’.
He said: ‘It is very unusual that someone who was fit and well managed to suspend themselves accidentally from the oven door.
‘What appears to have happened is that for some reason she has fallen and caught her pyjama top on the lower handle of the oven door.
‘I can’t explain how she ended up in this position it’s a very unusual case. In my 20 years of doing this I have never come across this
happening.’
‘Blackburn has lost a true character and the town, pubs and games nights will never be the same without her.’
Update ...A family of 3 and their dog were found dead on a Yosemite area hiking trail. The family seemed well-prepared for hiking, and authorities can't determine (yet) why they died. ...

The mystery surrounding the deaths of a couple, their baby daughter and the family dog found on a hiking trail near Yosemite National Park is deepening after autopsies yielded no immediate clues as to what caused their deaths. ...
Investigators are still considering an array of possible causes, from toxic algae reported in the nearby Merced River, to noxious gases from abandoned mines near the trail ...
First responders on Tuesday initially treated the area as a possible hazmat scene because of concerns over carbon monoxide from nearby mines.
Rattlesnake bites are still being considered, although it's likely there would have been evidence on the bodies ...
The only explanations that have been ruled out are causes like gunshot wounds or blunt force trauma ... , due to lack of any physical indications. There was neither a suicide note nor anything that would lead investigators to believe the deaths were intentional.
The Mariposa County Coroner is awaiting toxicology results as investigators continue to comb the scene for possible clues. Those results are expected to take at least two to three weeks. ...
Is it possible that lightning could've killed them but left no trace? No-one around as witness..Update ...
Initial autopsy results have not cast any light on what might have happened. Investigators are continuing to search for clues at the scene. Toxicology analyses are in progress, but it could take 2 to 3 weeks for them to reveal anything.

Lightning has been considered. One of the local news articles from yesterday mentioned there'd been lightning reported in the area at the time, but it didn't mention whether there were any specific autopsy / investigation results that indicated lightning. Is it possible that lightning could've killed them but left no trace? No-one around as witness..
Just wondering aloud - maybe a lightning strike will always leave telltale signs..
You've clearly never been a woman.I could understand how swallowing the flip key for my car
but cant think why you would stick it in your gob.
How about in one of the shopping bags you're already carrying? If your hands are full (ie with shopping bags) and you need your key to be easily accessible to unlock the car to put the bags in, then holding it in your mouth is natural. If you don't carry a handbag, where else would you put it?
Nope, it would slip down between the purchased items and be lost. How about in one of the shopping bags you're already carrying?
Unless one of the items you purchase on every shopping trip is a tupperware container about the same size and shape as the neck of the bag and place the key in that, on top of the shopping.Nope, it would slip down between the purchased items and be lost.
You'd have to tip everything out to find it. Not what you want to be doing out in public, in a secluded car park.
About 15 years ago when those ski pass key holders first came out I bought one and have been very happy with the arrangement ever since.\Anything 'big' that you put your car key on, then has to sit banging merrily against your leg as you drive, unless you unattach it for driving and only clip it onto the caribina, keyring or lanyard when you take it out of the ignition.
I'd suggest that this may be a bit too fussy for most people. It's easier just to make sure you're wearing 'those trousers' with the pockets. But 'hang on, I've got to go shopping, I'd better put my 'shopping trousers' on' is even more fussy.
