Radio 4...
Ritual Sexual Abuse: The Anatomy of a Panic (Part 1)

David Aaronovitch of The Times traces the powerful intellectual influences behind what he sees as one of the most important cultural shifts of the past 40 years: from a society in which accusations of sexual abuse were wrongly ignored to one in which the falsely accused were crushed by a system where the mantra was "victims must be believed".

Ritual Sexual Abuse: The Anatomy of a Panic (Part 2)

David Aaronovitch of The Times traces the powerful intellectual influences behind what he sees as one of the most important cultural shifts of the past 40 years: from a society in which accusations of sexual abuse were wrongly ignored to one in which the falsely accused were crushed by a system where the mantra was "victims must be believed".

In the second of two programmes, Aaronovitch re-examines the role played by unproven psychoanalytic theories which, from the 1980s, spread from the world of therapists in Canada and the USA to social work, medicine and then to law enforcement in Britain.

The programme explores the parallels between the belief in ritual abuse with some of the claims being made today about VIP paedophile rings and group murder.

Quick reminder that Alex Gibney’s Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary, Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief, is on Sky Atlantic at 9pm tonight.

Now launched on Freeview. A channel devoted to archive films.

This channel seems to have been available on satellite for a while. Now it has arrived on Freeview. It seems to be the broadcasting arm of the Renown DVD label and the focus is on British Bs and an assortment of Public Domain fare.

I know that the quality came in for some criticism on satellite but it may be worth retuning Freeview to see how these old-time fillums look now. :fckpc:

The second episode of Newman's show was even more provocative, taking on Richard Dawkins and the Neo-Darwinists to prove the "selfish gene" is a myth. Heady stuff for a comedy show.

Please listen out for this Radio 4 programme, part of the imminently-expected FrightNight offering: a reprise of the Stone Tape concept.

Described as a reimagining of Kneale's 1972 classic original..... http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-r...e-behind-the-screams-on-radio-4s-fright-night

Described as having been recorded in 3D (I think it's just a 21st century name for biaural recording) it may additionally reward by enjoying via headphones or whilst sitting in a darkened car deep in the country.....if you're tough enough.

ps note also a version of The Ring/Ringu ....now that's likely to be a challenging production

No use to me - I'm deaf in one ear. (Does this mean I only hear in black-and-white? o_O )

Strongly recommend this:

Robert Newman's take on evolution, really funny and thought-provoking, and dare I say it, quite Fortean.

Third episode has stuff on Stonehenge as a hospital, why saying "gender balance has gone too far the other way" is silly and why genes don't dictate your behaviour. Last episode next week!

I saw this the other day
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/my-psychic-life/on-demand
'My Psychic Life' on channel 4 - it's still on their website for a bit.
It wasn't unsympathetic to the strange characters. It was well done really. It wouldn't particularly make you believe in their talents. It was interesting anthropological fortean watching. I recommend.

Here's a gift idea. Sainsburys are selling The Prisoner DVD for 13 quid. I've looked around for this on lovefilm and it's never been available. Cheap at that price for a 6 disc cult classic I reckon.

Did anyone see Beowulf on ITV last night?
I'm thinking of buying it and would like loads of people to say it was fantastic.

Might be worth a looksee

The actor and presenter explores the world of freak shows, meeting people who use their medical conditions to educate, entertain and make money. Adam, who suffers from a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis, was approached to work with a famous American freak show and aims to discover if his concerns regarding exploitation are true. On his travels to the States and Mexico he meets the likes of Jesus Aceves, known as Wolf Boy in his stage persona, and actor Mat Fraser, star of cult series American Horror Story: Freak Show

Adam Pearson used to (maybe still does) live in Brighton, I've met him a few times and he's a lovely chap.

This is well worth a listen, especially for those interested in cephalapod intelligence or even, dare I say it, exobiology.

Anita Sullivan - The Octopus :: BBC Radio 4

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have eight legs, no bones, and skin that changes colour?

Hester is a Marine Biologist seeking to discover what it means to be an octopus. When she's called in to help the local aquarium try to breed two Giant Pacific Octopus (GPO), she uses the opportunity to carry out a social recognition experiment. Can an octopus recognise an individual human being? As Hester delves deeper into questions of cephalopod consciousness, she develops an attachment with 'Monster' - the male GPO.

"Four-hundred million years ago, when we shared the ocean, I was a bony fish, a prototype. But you... were already you. An octopus. Now I stand here, human. Confounded by you."

A strange and compelling journey into the mind of an ancient creature.

Watching the football (not Big Brother) on C5 (UK) I saw series one of Americas Hidden Pyramid Cities advertised for this monday at 8pm. Could be worth a wee look.

A team of experts uses cutting-edge technology to examine the history of a Native American people who built a thriving metropolis in what is now Illinois, tracing the rise and fall of a civilisation that came into existence in 900AD, but vanished 400 years later. Much of the site is covered by forest, but archaeologist John Kelly obtains a view of what lies beneath and exposes the true scale of the city, while Bill Iseminger hunts down the engineering secrets behind the 10-storey pyramid that stood at its centre

Another good radio play up on iPlayer now:
Nick Stafford - The Fire Inside (1999) [BBC Radio 4 extra]

''A stranger seeks shelter at an isolated farmhouse in the depths of winter. The occupants, Jack and Mavis, put him in an upstairs room, sparking a sinister chain of events - and an investigation into what has really been going on...''

That sounds very like a description of a short story by Henry Williamson, "A Winter's Tale".
(Worth a read - but no spoilers from me!)

Oooh, thanks for that rynner, I've just tracked down a collection of Williamson's stories with that one included on amazon, only 24p too!

Has anyone else been following the Art Bell drama that's been going on? He's been forced off the air and had to quit Midnight in the Desert because some maniac was shooting at him and stalking him. Very sad as he was what made the show, he was the best host of Coat to Coast AM too.

Whoa! I hadn't heard that.
I hope he's OK.

Edit: Apparently, Art Bell has done this before. He probably doesn't need to work now anyway, with all that money stacked away.
