On a (sort of) related note, from today's 'On This Day':
On 24 July 1924, at a time of Arab hostility, Flight Lieutenant W.T. Day and Pilot Officer D.R.Stewart were sent from British headquarters on a routine reconnaissance over the Mesopotamian desert. According to schedule, they would not be absent for more than a few hours. When they did not return, the plane was found in the desert in perfect running order with petrol in the tank. Footprints of both men were traced for 40 yards from the plane and then vanished. Aeroplanes, mounted police and tribal patrols searched unceasingly for five days. The mystery remains unsolved.
